ABCA needs sponsors for local lands
EXETER - Many people have
supported programs to protect rain
forests in South America and now
the Ausable-Bayfield Conserva-
tion Authority needs service clubs
and individuals to adopt local con-
servation lands.
The ABCA has to raise over
685,000 locally to manage and pay
the taxes on its conservation lands
in 1994. The Authority owns 8270
acres of land across its 1000
square mile area of jurisdiction ac-
quired for environmental purposes
over the past 40 years.
These costs include $25,000 in
maintenance costs for non -revenue
producing conservation areas
(Clinton CA, Morrison Dam CA,
Lucan CA, Thedford CA, Ban-
nockburn WA) and $60,000 in
land taxes for all lands including
revenue-producing conservation
areas, agreement forests and man-
agement ares. "In the past, we re-
ceived a tax rebate from the prov-
ince, but that program has been
eliminated. We're lobbying the
government to at least reinstate the
taxes for provincially important
lands. The maintenance costs in-
clude grass cutting, garbage collec-
tion, safety inspections, trail main-
tenance, etc. - the costs associated
with people using the lands for
recreation or education," said Tom
Prout, the Authority's General
Manager/Secretary-Treasurer.
In 1993, the Huron Fish and
Game Club of the Clinton area
covered a significant portion of the
expenses of Bannockburn Wildlife
Area and Clinton Conservation
Area. They were able to spread
their contributions over the year as
they raised funds. At Pork Blake
Conservation Area, the Ministry of
the Environment and Energy
(owners of the property) paid for
most of the 1993 taxes.
Stephen Township and the vil-
lage of Zurich have maintained
Crediton CA and Zurich CA re-
spectively for many years.
"If service clubs or private indi-
viduals would adopt their local
conservation area, costs would be
covered and we would be able to
continue to operate the areas to
benefit those local residents," Prost
said.
The Authority has some immedi-
ate needs for funds. Firstly, money
is needed to groom the cross-
country skiing trails at Morrison
Dam CA and hopefully the Exeter -
Morrison Corridor as well as the
snowmobile trails t Parkhill CA.
Secondly, money will be needed
for the 1994 taxes and maintenance
costs. Anyone interested in adopt-
ing a specific property can obtain
financial requirements by calling
the ABCA's Financial Services
Manager, Sharon Romphf. Dona-
tions are tax deductible.
