That was the case fast Wednes- day night as the hosting Lucan Irish met the defending OHA Junior De- velopment League champions Mitchell Hawks. Both came into the game with 27 points but when it was over, the Irish not only had a very shod bench, but went back into their dressing room with a 5-3 loss. - Lucan had a slim 3-2 lead after 40• minutes of play but, with several key players either not at the game or ejected earlier in the contest and coach Ken Needham kicked out, the Irish self destructed. Needham gave out some verbal abuse to referee Dave Marsh after Lucan forward Derek Greenlee was tossed and had to go stand up in the bleachers. After the game, Needham said it was the first time he has ever been kicked out of a hockey game. He gets a two -game suspension which meant assistant Jamie Pearce took over behind the bench. Lucan was already minus for- wards Steve Moore, Scou Riddell, Steve Matthews and Jason Glasser before Wednesday's game. When high -scoring rookie Rob Davis was ejected for checking -from -behind, veterans Greenlee and Jeremy Je- mec also kicked out by Marsh, the Irish seemed to be very short on of- fence. Pearce felt the rest of the team should have been able to pick up the slack. "I always consider every guy on the team equal to the next one. t. Mitchell played well in the third period and the 13 skaters the Irish had in the game, ran out of energy and couldn't do the basic things like clearing the puck or making good passes, right. Not mad: "I'm not toe lly mad that we lost. We put out a good ef- fon for what we had left on the bench," said Pearce. The visitors dominated through- out the first period but after a flour- ish of Lucan shots, Jemec scored sending the lrish into the first break up by one. Mitchell's Todd McCann ripped a quick shot to tie it up and then Greg VanBakel gave the visitors a two - goal margin. Lancers shock Hawks 7-2 By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Heading into Friday night's game, the visiting.Lambeth Lancers were in sixth place while the Exeter Hawks were sitting in fourth. If you Inked into the South Hu- ron Recreation Centre however, you wouldn't know there were nine points separating the two OHA Junior Development League west division teams. The Lancers handed the Hawks their sixth loss of the year, a 7-2 trouncing. After the game, the Hawks' coaching staff put the locals on the ice and skated them very hand for several minutes. It was a discipli- nary measure that hopefully was beneficial. "I guess the guys are happy with fourth of fifth place at this point in the year," said Hawks' coach George Pratt who was very disap- pointed with the loss. "The way it looked tonight, they have no inten- tions to contend for second place." Exeter started off on a good note Friday as Steve Farquhar scored from Ray Cousineau and Scott Smale and the fast opening period saw the Hawks head into the dress -1 ing room up 1-0. But the Lancers got to Exeter goalie Kirk Durand very quickly in the middle frame and were leading 3-1 after 40 minutes. Durand looked shakey most of the night asi he kept dropping down on one knee and had trouble protecting the' posLs. It was a tough night for Watson as Mitchell's Josh Lamboum ran into him and later in the game, after the winning goal, Watson was shaken up. When Greenlee stepped in to challenge Lamboum, the Lucan player was given a ten-minute mis- conduct and ejected. However, the rookie netminder made 33 saves while at the other end, Mitchell's Elliot Faust (also played well turning away 26 shots. "Watson was the saviour to- night," said Pearce. "1 don't know. what the shuts were but he played amazing." The best goal of the night carne when Lucan centre Greg DePrest drew four Hawks' defenders to the middle of the Mitchell zone and with 17 seconds left in the second period, slid the puck over to Travis Stinchcombe who put it past Faust. Also scoring for Lucan was rookie Jay Jackson. Wednesday's game had a playoff atmosphere to it as both clubs skat- ed hard and, at times, played very physical. At one time in the first period, there were four Lucan and three Mitchell players in the penalty box- es. Marsh did not call a penalty in the third period. "I don't think they (Irish) were nervous," said Pearce. "They al- ways get up for Exeter and Mitch - 1 ell." Now we need your help to get even more back. Ontario's paper mills make recycled newsprint out of every single old news- paper and flyer insert you give them - and that's still not enough. They actually have to import:more from the U.S. If we recover more old newspapers, the less will go to dumps and the less mills will need to import. And the more municipal tax dollars we'll save.
