Exeter man heading
Cadet Instructor School
EXETER - An Exeter man recently took on a special role with the
Canadian Armed Forces Reserve.
On Nov 2, Greg Pfaff assumed the role of Officer Commanding -
Training Centre Borden and became the youngest officer to be offered
this position. He is now in charge of the Regional Cadet Training
School in Borden.
And since the position can only be occupied by reserve force person-
nel with a rank of at least major, Pfaff was also promoted from captain
to major. That makes him one of the youngest majors in the region.
"I was shocked when I was offered the position," Pfaff said. He was
told his leadership skills were a key point in the decision.
But it didn't all happen over night. He first joined cadets in 1974 as
part of the Huron Park branch. When he tamed 19, in 1979, Pfaff
stayed on with cadets as a civilian instructor. In 1980 he joined the Ca-
det Instructors list which is part of the Canadian Forces Primary Re-
serve. "You go through the same enrolment procedures as someone
joining the Canadian Armed Forces," Pfaff said.
And for the -past five years, he has been teaching at the school he is
now in charge of overseeing. Although the position title may seem con-
fusing, Pfaff said it is similar to being a principrlr$rcharge of teachers
and students at a school.
The training centrehe commands is responsible for Canadian Armed
Forces -Reserve Officer Training.
That means being away from home for three months.
"Fortunately the time is staggered through the year," Pfaff said. "It
averages about ten days at a time."
He credits a lot of his success to the support of his family, especially
his wife Cathy. "You have to be with someone who is really under-
standing," he said because the job requires him to be away from home,
especially on weekends.
Right now Pfaff is getting ready for the March session at Borden. He
is confident that his age won't get in the way of doing a top notch job.
"It's a challenge that I've been working towards over the past few
►," l+eaaid.
