EXETER - No slap shots, no
body checking; but oh what a
game.
The Exeter Mohawks zigged-
and-zagged Saturday night to a 10-
8 win over the visiting Toronto
NHL Oldtimers.
In front of a capacity crowd at the
South Huron Recreation Centre, es-
timated at over 1,000 the local Sen-
ior 'A' hockey club was not only
able to put on a great show, but
raise some funds for themselves as
well.
There were gags and laughs but
mostly there was the bewilderment
at just how well guys like 22 year
NHL veteran Dean Prentice and
Leaf great Bill Derlago can still
move the puck.
"It was all for fun. It was enter-
taining for the fans," said Mo-
hawks' captain Joe Scherer.
Those who attended the game
certainly got their money's worth as
they watched a good hockey game
and after many youngsters lined up
for autographs.
Surprisingly the game had a very
serious tone to it as Exeter kept up
the pace in the third period. Scherer
admitted the locals did want to win.
"It was the first time for a lot of
us playing against ex-NHLers and
that gears you up a bit."
There were lots of gags in this
game starting with Exeter goalie
Rick Pikul and Oldtimers' Dave
Tataryn switching nets but when
Tataryn let one go in, they swtiched
again.
Tataryn who played with the
New York Rangers, was hurt in the
second period and did not return to
the game.
Referee Don Van Massenhoven,
standing in for the absent Eddie
Shack who had prior commitments,
was offered a bribe by the celebrity
visitors to move a faceoff.
Jack Valiquette who scored over
200 professional goals netted throe
against the Mohawks and he was
one of the biggest pranksters. He
had his wig snatched by Paul Hen-

Veteran player: One of the Old-
timers in Exeter on Saturday was
Dean Prentice who played 22 years
in the NHL with Boston, Detroit
...mid New York and had 394 goals.
He was pleased to sec the large
smwd in Exeter and complimented
,.dte Mohawks on their play.
"They were serious. It was a good
game. They were well positioned
and handled the puck well. It was
fun playing them," said Prentice.
After a brilliant pro career, why
does he continue to lace them up
and travel all over the country.
° "For the love of the game and the
fellowship we have with each oth-
er."
Prentice admitted this will prob-
ably be his last winter playing with
the Oldtimers as he is getting a hip
replacement in the spring.
At the end of the night, the Old-
timers gathered with the fans in the
community centre to sign auto-
graphs. It was nice to see especially
with the way today's pro athletes
charge a fee for inking their name
on souvenirs.
"The kids don't remember us but
their fathers, mothers and grandfa-
thers remember us," said Prentice.

hawks, coach Dave Revington also
said it was to help local fans be-
come more aware of Senior 'A'
hockey.
"That's part of the reason why we
got these guys. We want to market
our product. We want people to
come out and see what we're trying
to accomplish."
He added that the large turnout
also made the Oldtimers' play to
their best ability.
"When they see a big crowd they
put a little more into it and put on a
good show."
Revington said they needed about
1,000 fans to break even financially
on the event and there were a lot
more than that in the local facility.
Scherer said he hopes those who
were at the game continue to come
out and support the club.
