Lack of defensemen hurt
Mohawks in loss to Aylmer
Take on NHL Oldtimers Saturday night
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - It was quite an inter-
esting weekend for the Exeter Mo-
hawks:
Saturday they travelled to Dunn-
ville, where, after one period, play
was suspended because the lights
ant out.
The nett night in Exeter against
er, the Mohawks scored three
goals in 45 seconds but still came
up short 9-6 against the Hornets.
Unofficially, the game with the
Dunnville Mudcats goes down as a
1-1 tie, and that, combined with the
loss against Aylmer has the Mo-
hawks Southwestern Senior 'A'
Hockey League record at 4-2-2.
"I told Dunnville we'd replay the
game if they'd pay for our bus
which is $750. We decided to take
a point and go. home," said Exeter
coach Dave Revington.
Joe Scherer scored the lone goal
in Dunnville while goalie Rick Pi-
kul played a strong game making
seven big saves. Exeter only had 13
skaters dressed for both games and
on Sunday had just three defense -
men.
Dale Timmerman, Jeff Warren,
Kris Bedard. Jeff McLenaghan and
Dean Schram a were all missing
from the Mohawks' blueline Sun-
day and Revington said that was
one reason Exeter was beaten.
"It was a big part of it. (Stefan)
Camire is a new player and he
hasn't played contact hockey in a
few years."
,Camire, played Major Junior 'A'
for the Verdun Canadiens, was in
Exeter Mohawks' detenseman Stefan Camire was welcomed
to the club in an unusue way as he was one of only three
blueliners in Sunday's Sete ')r 'A' hockey game. Here he tries
to get to the puck ahead of Aylmer's Mike Haines.

Girls beat Bears, fall to Vikings
OODERICH -. All season long the Goderich Vikings
gave South Huron a hard time. But although the Pan-
thers lost both regular season_games to the Vikings by__
eight points, Thursday's game was a big surprise.
Goderich won the Huron Conference senior girls
basketball crown with a crushing 41-10 win over the
visiting Panthers. What was a surprise was that two
days earlier in Exeter, the Panthers looked sharp in
their conference semi-final win over Seaforth.
South Huron easily beat the visiting Bears 26-12 in a
game which saw the two teams tied 4-4 after the first
quarter.
Just 20 seconds intd5.the second quarter, Stacey Thur-
man hit a three -pointer which ripped the mesh and
combined with a Candace Miller layup gave the hosts
a 9-8 lead at the half.
The first half was somewhat one-sided as far as fouls
"Awe etmce reed as the Bears were only whistled down
once compared to 11 times by the Panthers.
There was only 1:35 left in the third quarter when
Miller hit a 12 -foot jumper breaking a 10-10 tie and
from then on the game belonged to South Huron.
When Jenny Robertson hit a long shot with 18 sec-
onds left in the third, the hosts had their biggest lead of
the game. In the fourth, the Panthers dominated and
played well defensively as Kerri-Lynn Case stole the
ball and drew a foul.
Boys' basketball
Junior tournament
set for this weekend
EXETER - The first of back-to-back boys' basketball tournaments will
be held at the South Huron District High. School this weekend.
Beginning Friday afternoon, the South Huron Junior Boys Invitational
will go this weekend with the senior tournament scheduled for next week-
end.
The host Panthers open the junior event on Friday at 3:30 p.m. when
they host the North Middlesex Marauders. Woodstock Huron Park meet
Mitchell at 5 p.m. followed by Kincardine and Lambton Central at 6:30
p.m. The final opening round game is at 8 p.m. when East Elgin takes on
Walkerton.
Saturday's consolation final is scheduled for 6 p.m. while the champion-
ship food is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Hockey team
drops opener
ST. MARYS - After a good exhi-
bition schedule in which they man-
aged to win two games, tie one and
lose two,•the South Huron Panthers
boys' hockey team dropped its Hu-
ron Conference league opener.
Wednesday in St. Marys, 'the
hosts skated to a 6-2 win. Earlier
this year in Exeter, the Panthers
beat the same team in an exhibition
game 8-3.
Scoring for South Huron who
trailed 4-1 at the end of the first pe-
riod were Ben Geiger and Chris
MacDonald. The Panthers attempt-
ed to get back on the winning side
of things yesterday as they played
host to Goderich.
the American Hockey League for
about 20 games with the Sher-
brooke Canadiens and has universi-
ty experience with Ottawa.
He along with regular§ Barry
Baynham and Mary Rutledge, and
forward Jacques Bealieau played
defence Sunday.
Bealieau was_given a ten minute
misconduct wiffi about eight min-
utes left in the game which put the
Mohawks at a very big disadvan-
tage. .
"I haven't played competitively in
three years," said Camire after the
game. "At fust I was kind of ner-
vous and I thought it was going to
be very interesting."
Despite not playing contact hock-
ey for a while, Camire who works
in London, did not look that much
out of place.
He is a very fast skater who
makes up his mind quickly what he
is going ,to do when he has the
puck.
"I have to work on getting my
timing down. A few of my passes
weren't as quick as they should
have been," he saw.
Camire was not drafted into the
National Hockey League as he
played both forward and defence
during his junior career which no
doubt hampered any chances of a
shot at the NHL.
Big comeback: The Mohawks
trailed Sunday's game 7-3 but fired
three quick goals in less than a min-
ute to pull to within one and make
the final few minutes very exciting.
With Aylmer's Jim Patterson and
Wilbur Hutchison both in the pen-
alty box, Revington opted to yank
Pikul out of the net with 5:11 left to
play -
It gave the Mohawks a six -on -
'three situation which they cashed in
on as Jamie English scored.
"I've done things like that before.
It's the coaches only way to help a
hockey team, it picks them up,"
said Revington.
The gamble certainly worked as
Exeter got another powerplay
marker from Greg Murray and the
Mohawks pulled to within one as
Jon Buder connected with his fifth
of the year.
"He's (Boder) a very disciplined
and hard working player. He plays
the game properly. I wish I had five
more guys like him," said Reving-
ton.
Also scoring for Exeter were Ka
vin McArter who id a blast go very
early in the game, English had two
and Greg Snyder scored.
Trevor Hunter started in net for
the tt after the seventh goal
by Pikul.
