EXETER - Judy Dougall's per-
sonal touch has made a mark in the
business world.
She is the owner of Gifted Hands,
a business where she creates de-
signs on mirmrand glass items.
"It started as a hobby in my kitch-
en," she said. Her mother-in-law
was the first person she did work
tor. "She has the first pieces 1 ever
worked on."
Dougall stumbled across the craft
white doing stained glass work. "1
was on a buying trip and saw the
books end became interested," she
said.
Now almost six years later, -the
business has been% relocated to a
'tapaeious building just behind her
Vie. And inside she diligently
+llflcs on engraving and etching
' glass and mirror items in addition
=to stained glass designs.
Most of the work she does is for
special occasions such as weddings
and anniversaries.
To create the images she either
draws the designs free hand or uses
stencils. "It depends what the cus-
, tomer wants," she said. "I have a
number of books with designs in
them, but if someone comes in with
a picture or idea of their own I try
to Mike something for them.'
Once - the design is ehMen, The
next decision is whether to engrave
or etch the image. The difference
between the two is that etched de-
signs are more visible while the en-
graved is more delicate and refined.
For engraving she uses a special
pen that has a diamond tip. That's
what makes the cuts the glass or
mirror. Dougall said it takes a bit of
practice to get a feel for the pen and
to know how much force to use.
The trick, she said, is to find the
perfect diamond angle that will
give a smooth cut.
The etched items on the other
hand, have the design stencil placed
on the glass and then a special
knife is used to cut around the sten-
cil. Once the image is sketched
out, the next step is sandblasting.

This takes away the polished look
of the glass and tams the surface
white and that's where the design
appears.
Dougall said the amount of time
it takes to make each design varies
with the complexity of the design.
Her abilities aren't limited to
small items.
Over the past few years she has
branched out into more elaborate
work on doors, windows, mirrors,
picture glass and even motorcycle
windshields.
And in January Dougall said she's
going to start experimenting with
sandblast carving. "This method
would give designs more of a three
dimensional look," she said.
And this would allow her to
create even more intricate designs.
"The possibilities arc endless,"
she said.
