Senior boys' volleyball Panthers knock off Rams to win Huron -Perth championsiip MITCHELL - After try' ing for several years, and be- ing close, the South Huron District High School Pan- thers have won the Huron -Perth senior boys' volleyball title. It was a very big thrill for the Panthers who knocked off nine -time defending champions, Stratford Central Rams, in a 17-15 fmale. "It was one of the best Huron -Perth matches people have ever seen," said South Huron coach ScouHalpen- ny. The Panthers dropped the first game of the best -of - three final series 15-6 and were down by six points in the crucial second game before bouncing back and tie- ing it up 12-12. "They (Rams) were losing their cool and we were given an extra point," said Halpenny on Stratford's un- sporstmanlike play. South Huron came back and won the second game 15-13 and in the third and deciding game, surged in may,, _, ., .._,a - BasR2Wal'" Midgets bow to Vikings front 12-4 before the defending champs rallied and tied it 12-12 and went ahead at one point 15-14. , "We took a time out and just decided what to do," said Halpenny. What they did was take their time and rattled off three points to win the Conference crown. The Panthers opened pool play on Friday splitting two games with Mitchell before taking Goderich two straight and then two more against tough St. Mikes. Halpenny said the wins over St. Mikes boosted his team which then won the semi-finals two straight over Stratford Northwestern. "It's been a goal since I started with the senior pro- gram," he said of winning the title. The Panthers travel to North Lambton on Thursday for an exhibition game and then on Saturday they will be in Dorchester for the Westem Ontario Secondary School Association 'AA' tournament which will also be attended by the Rams. ' EXETER - Goderich Vikings continued to show their superiority on the basketball court on Saturday as they won the Huron Conference midget girls title over hosting South Huron District High School Panthers. The one -day, four team tourna- ment. saw the Vikings win all three of their games, topping with a 49- 30 win against the Panthers. In the first couple of minutes of this game, the two teams ex- changed baskets but Goderich quickly pulled away and led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. South Huron was always pressur- ing and with one second left in the fust quarter, Kari Taylor made a nice drive to the basket which she converted. The second and third quarters saw the Panthers having trouble moving the ball out of their own end and it was 35-23 after three quarters of play. Goderich got into early foul trou- ble in the fourth quarter and when Panthers' Jayne Ballantyne was bumped heavily, it was the seventh Vikings foul compared to none for South Huron. The Panthers tried to come back late in the game as Sarah Szabo banked a shot off the glass to pull South Huron to within nine but it wasn't enough. Szabo led the Panthers offence with 11 points while Tracy Millian had 15 for the Vikings. South Huron opened the tourna- ment with a 44-39 loss to Seaforth which saw Julie Rooseboom and Katie Seaton lead the Panthers with eightpoints each. Against the Central Huron Red - men, the Panthers bounced back and won 42-37 thanks to a big 18 - point third quarter. Rooseboom, who had 14 points, netted nine of those in the third quarter. Goderich opened with a 54-18 win over the Redmen and then topped Seaforth 37-20. Seaforth who officially finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record, beat Central Huron 49-42. Seniors advance: Becky Hart- man and Angie Gould each scored six points as the senior Panthers beat Madill 28-27 on Thursday to advance to the Huron semi-finals. Becky Hartman played a strong game defensively for the winners who hosted Central Huron yester- day. The winner of that game will meet either Goderich or Seaforth for the Huron title. South Huron's juniors were not as fortunate last week as they lost 33- 22 to Madill which ended their sea- son. Stephanie Pearson played well both offensively and defensively scoring six points. Hockey team collect two wins LONDON - The high school hockey season has just begun and the South Huron District Panthers are setting lots of games in already. Last Tuesday at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the Panthers battled visiting John Paul to a 2-2 exhibition draw. Scoring in that one for the hosts who led 2-0 after the first period. were Jeff Glavin and Ben Geiger. In London on the weekend at the Clarek Road Tournament, the Pan- thers dropped a 5-2 decision to Re- gina Mundi. Geiger and Derek Campbell scored in that one. The Panthers bounced back and beat Goderich 4-0 as Jason Hodg- our Views "Exeter spirit something to behold" Dear Mr. Groves: As the coach of a participating field hockey team at last week's OFSAA tournament, l wanted to congratulate Exeter on organizing a truly outstanding championship. We were treated to warm, gra- cious hosts in Jim Workman and his committee who put together a wonderful program of games, banquet, and those little extra features such as the goodie bag that every individual received from the regis- tration gioup of personnel. From our pleasant, helpful student hostess (Christy) to the excep- tional first aid attendants, this tournament was a class act. The com- munity involvement was so apparent and your Exeter spirit was something to behold. A very Big Thank You should be extended to Jim Workman, his organizing committee, the many volunteers who did so much to make our visit so special, the business sector of Exet- er, the field maintenance people, and South Huron District High School. Before we left Toronto to attend OFS AA, I told individuals at our school that I felt that Exeter would show us how a small close knit community could tackle a huge project with great enthusiasm. I was so right. During the opening ceremonies, one of the speakers told the athletes to place their right arms across their chests and give them- selves a well deserved pat on the back for reaching OFSSA. Well, Exeter, you have earned a very special pat on the back for you showed the big city folks your dedication and your heart. When I'm touring our splendid province in the future, I'll make sure to visit Exeter again so I might recall my brief but memorable stay. Thank you, Exeter! Sincerely, Pat Dartford (Coach - North Toronto Field Hockey Team) Field hockey officials impressed" Dear Editor Last week, South Huron District High School and the Exeter area opened their hearts, andtheirarms to approximately 400 athletes, coaches, officials, chaperons, and supporters from the OFSAA Field Hockey Championship. The fields of South Huron and Exeter have not seen crowds nor excitement like this since the days of the old football games against Goderich. The student body is to be highly commend( for their excellent display of manners and support. Vis- iting coaches, players and umpires were very impressed by the num- bers, even on the Saturday. They were especially impressed by the fans positive support for the Panthers Field Hockey teatn and the re- spectful treatment of the opposing teams and officials. 'Students served in many capacities such as hosts, ball retrievers, scorers, timers, band, choir, grounds maintenance, concession stands, banquet set up and many other areas. Their help ensured the success of the tournament. Too often we hear the horror stories of our students, and some- times with justification. Recent negative occurrences at this school have been caused by a very small segment of our school population, and we agree with the proposal policy of zero tolerance in matters of violence in our school. However, on the occasion of our OFSAA Championship the majority of the South Huron student body acted with class, and honour, and showed that spirit is alive and well at South Huron. We encourage the student body to remember this past week and strive to maintain the momentum through their time at school.
