Lucan Shamrock Novice AE November 13 Exeter 3 at Lucan 4 Goals: Kyle Smith (2), Nick Hocking, Jeff The Wrath of Grapes by Don Cherry THE DARTH VADER OPHOCKEY EDDIE SHORE was called the EDMONTON EXPRESS. He was a HALL OF FAMER, and back in the 20s and 30s he was a su- per-duper, super star. When he played for THE BOSTON BRUINS, (just listen to these stats), he was M.V.P. of the NHL in 1933, 35, 36 and 38, first ALL STAR in 1931, 32,33,35, 38 and 39, he was a STANLEY CUP winner and naturally a HALL OF FAM - ER and as tough as they come. He was rushing defencemen, some- thing unheard of. Back in those days a defenceman was told to stay back and defend the goal. Not EDDIE, he would skate like the wind and he owned the puck when he had it on his stick. The next defenceman to do this was a young man called BOBBY ORR 30 years later. BOBBY will tell you he wasn't the first rushing defence - man, it was EDDIE SHORE. EDDIE was absolutely fearless and never backed down. Just lis- ten to a game he had with MONTREAL. First a MONTREAL player cut EDDIE on the cheek, then ripped his chin, then they smacked him in the mouth and knocked out some teeth. A11 told in the game, EDDIE had a slice over the eye about an inch and a half long, a broken nose, three teeth gone, and another slice over the cheek. He should have been in the hospital for a month, but EDDIE never missed a game, in fact he played the very next game. EDDIE'S thresh -hold of pain was unbelievable. Once he skated a whole game with cuts that required 18 stitches. He had the leg stitched up and he played the first period. The stitches broke open again and he kept playing with the blood trailing him around the ice, (can you imagine that today?) 1 remember the story he told us about the time he had his ear al- most sliced off and it was hanging by a thread. Two doctors told him there was no chance in saving the ear. EDDIE wouldn't believe him, so he put a bandage on the ear and drove around until he found a doctor who would sew it up. He was as tough as they come and colourful. When he was intro- duced at the GARDENS he would come out of the chute wearing a c the fans would go wild. EDDIE had a dark side. It seemed he didn't mind his own pant and so he loved to dish out pain. For instance, one night in BOS- TON GARDENS the BRUINS were playing the TORONTO MA- -P.LE LEAFS. EDDIE was knocked down in the LEAFS end by KING CLANCY. EDDIEof up and came up behind a LEAF playyer called ACE BAILEYS EDDIE knocked the feet from under ACE and he fell back and hit his head. Bailey fractured his skull and was given the last rites as he was expected,totlie.alis-wasladtftp be tolerated by the LEAFS. A big tough hootthl>tiatll ED >H[QAT ER came over to EDDIE and decked rum, knocking him out cold. The fans couldn't believe it. Twq guys being carried off the ice at once. ACE survived and lived to be a ripe old age. He died only a couple of years ago. A little sidelight to this story is that this is where the ALL STARS game started. The NHL got together and had a game to benefit ACE and presto the ALL STAR GAME! EDDIE retired in his thirties over a contract squabble, and that's where the troubles for a lot of players started. For as a wonderful a hockey player as he was; he was a tyrant as owner of his SPRING- FIELD INDIANS of the AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE (even the name sends chills down my back as I played for him for 3 ears). Let me give jou an idea of how bad it was playing for SHORE and the SPRINGFIELD INDIANS. If a player was acting up or giving the coach a hard time in the NHL, he would be sent to SPRING-- FIELD (it was like you were being sent to DEVIL'S ISLAND to be punished). In fact it's a true story that player's had it written into their contracts that they couldn't be sent to SPRINGFIELD for pun- ishment. EDDIE was hard on himself and hard on the players to the extent that he was so cruel that he ruined lives of people. Not only that, he thought he was a doctor and that he could.cure cancer with what he called the "MAROT TREATMENT". BILLY SWEENEY who won the scoring title for SHORE, one time had a sore ankle. SHORE gave him the infamous hot and cold treatment. He put BILLY'S foot in a cold ice bucket and then boil- ing hot water. The ice, believe it or not was the ice that the zamboni picked up from the rink. It was filthy and BILL got an infected an- kle. Another little gem BRIAN KILREA who was the captain of the team, had cracked ribs. EDDIE made him sit in a hot tub until BRIAN passed out, (EDDIE called him gutless for passing out)) EDDIE gave me the hot and cold treatment for a broken toe., (need- less to say, after one treatment I jammed my foot into my skate and forgot the toe). The treatments were worse than the injury. EDDIE also made BRIAN play with a jaw broken in two places. The money of hockey was a big thing with SHORE. EDDIE would suspend players for "indifferent play" even though they hadn't played in a month. Just EDDIE'S way of keeping the payroll down. When WAYNE LARKEN had a bonus for twenty goals he was benched when he reached 18 goais. BRIAN KILREA was benched the last two games when he was going for the scoring title and lost the title by a point. ROSE and the rest of the wives were invited to the arena one night, so ROSE and the wives got all dolled up thinking they were going to a party. But instead EDDIE held a meeting with the wives in e dressing room and proceeded to tell them they must stop having sex with their husbands for the PLAY-OFFS. Next time I will continue the saga of EDDIE SHORE, THE DARTH VADER OF HOCKEY. Why did we put up wth this treatment you ask? Because we loved the game and would do any- thing to play. Wacky Weekend!
