After two overtime wins, Broncos top Dresden 5-2
EXETER - The Exeter Atom
Broncos were not going to be de-
nied.
Sunday night at the South Huron
Recreation Centre, the Broncos
bcat Dresden 5-2 to win the 'A' title
and capture the Petro Canada Tro-
phy of the Bill Batten Memorial
Minor Hockey Tournament.
The Broncos had to struggle
harder than any other team to get to
the final as they beat Mitchell 3-2
in overtime Friday night in the
opening game of the 30 -team tour-
nament and then Saturday night
beat Thedford 4-3 again in over-
time.
Both of those games were decid-
ed in a shootout but before Sun-
day's finale with Dresden, Exeter
coach Dan Overholt said there
would not be another overtime
agame.
He was right and his Broncos
went out immediately wanting their
names placed on the trophy along-
side of the 1990 winners Port Do-
ver, 1991 Seaforth and 1992 Mitch-
ell.
Dresden's Scou Bruinsma opened
the scoring but it was 3-1 for.the
Broncos as Matthew Rowe scored
to tie it from Steven Rasenberg and
Craig Overholt.
Exeter forechecked a lot and it
was 2-1 when Brandon Martin
• hipped one up high. Overholt drew
:The assist. With three seconds left
in the first, Barry Parsons let go
with a hard shot that trickled over
the line.
Just 43 seconds into the middle
period, Mark Biiinsky connected to
Novice division
make it 4-1 with the assist going to
Ryan Groot. Dresden dominated
the second and Justin Wright
scored.
But with a two -goal lead, Over-
holt put the icing on the cake as he
one; timed it six feet in front of the
net. Martin assisted, picking up his
second point of the game.
Exeter defenseman Jared Bourne
was named the MVP for his team.
It was Bourne w,go scored the
winner in the shootout against
Mitchell while Mike Seip notched
the winner in the shootout against
Thedford.

Kings take 'A' title, Waxers close
EXETER- For the second time in
three years, the Stephen Township
novices have won the 'A' tide of
the Bill Batten Memorial Tourna-
ment.
In 1991, the Stephen Kings were
the champs but last year it was
New Hamburg taking home the
Anstett Jewelers Trophy. Sunday
night the Kings edged Lambeth 3-
2.
Kings' Jesse Schroeder scored
unassisted very early in the game
and then with 50 seconds left in the
second period Dale Machesney tied
it up for Lambeth.
It only took 29 seconds for
Schroeder to team with Kris Fink-
beiner and Jesse McCann and it
was 3-1 when Kings' Roman .Wil-
son went in alone and put a back-
hander up high into the net. Brad
Schenk assisted qn what proved to
be the winning goal.
With 3:08 left in the game, Eric
Stoyanovich pulled Lambeth clos-
er.
Stephen made it to the final after
nipping Exeter 2-1 and easily get-
ting past Thamesford 8-2. Goalie
Two titles in throe yearn is a big accomplishment for the Ste-
phen Township Novice Kings. Here with their winning trophy
and banner are Shawn Thompson, Scott Davies, Roman Wil-
son and Jesse Schroeder.
Dane Michielson played very well
for the champs, allowing just five
goals in three games.
'B' FINAL
The Exeter Novice Waxers were
very close in their quest to capture
the 'B' tide but it was Ilderton tak-
ing home the banner with a slim 2-
1 victory.
Following a scoreless first period
Ilderton's Charlie Moir connected
from Jeff McLean just 42 seconds
into the middle frame.
Waxers' Cam Murray and Darryl
Bourne did a great job stopping
Brent McQueen's breakaway but
Aaron Brown made it 2-0 as he
scored ' from McLean and
McQueen.
Exeter's Tim Meidinger and
Amanda Wuerth put a lot of pres-
sure on the Ilderton net and it was
Meidinger scoring from Justin
Hayter with 3:26 left.
Meidinger, whose shot trickled
just underneath' goalie Chris Die-
nesch, was named the Waxers'
MVP for the game while Dienesch
took home his team's honours.
Exeter started the tournament
with a slim 2-1 loss to Stephen
Township and then blasted Thed-
ford 13-0 before heading to the 'B'
final.

to 'B' championship
EXETER - Goalie Tony Eagleson had the shutout to lead the Exeter
Peewee Legions to a 4-0 win over Lucan Century 21 in the 'B' final of the

While Eagleson sparked the defence, it was the three -goal effort of for-
ward Dave Marshall which led the offence. Exeter who are tied for the
lead in the Shamrock League standings, took a 3-0 lead after a scoreless
opening frame.
Jeff Campbell spoued the winners to a 1-0 lead as he teamed with Chad
Dalrymple who had three assists during the game. It was 2-0 .when Mar -
:ball put up a high backhander from Brian Hayman.

Marshall teamed with Dalrymple and Campbell for the fourth Exeter goal.

huge glove grab on Campbell.

Hillsburgh 2-0.
PEEWEE 'A'
With the JMR Electric Trophy on the line, Seaforth fought off a very
tough Hagersville team to win 3-2 in overtime. It was the fourth shootout
of the tournament but this one had even more excitement as it went down
to just one skater from each team on the ice at a time.
Scou VanDooren scored the winner on a big open ice but both teams
had their chances to score in the shootout.
