World War 1 veterans remembered
Remembering Canada's wars and its veterans becomes a lit-
tle more difficult each passing year. The Royal Canadian Le-
gion points out that the average age of the World War 11 vete-
ran this year is 71 years old, and Korean War veterans are in
their early 60's. Everyone younger has little or no recollection
of those conflicts and the sacrifices they required. The photo-
graph above was taken in 1965 by Exeter Legion member Ted
MacDonald of all the surviving World War I veterans from the

tative from the Great War, as all have since passed on. In

Nory, W M. Cutting, Wilf Reeves, Bill Jeffery, Maurice Quance,
and Vic Hoggarth. Behind, from left are Louis Day, Bill Parker,

Home renovations
on rise for 1994
OTTAWA -'Renovation spend-
ing is projected to increase 3.5 per-
cent in 1994, according to Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corpora-
tion's National Renovation Mar-
kets Report, released September
30. Renovation spending is expect-
ed to reach $17.5 billion in 1994,
up from $16.8 billion projected for
this year.
"Projected increases in housing
starts and sales of existing houses
next year will help spur activity in
the renovation market," according
to Gilles Proulx, CMHC's Chief
Economist. "Home sales tend to
boost the renovation market be-
cause many improvement projects
are done shortly before, or imme-
diately after a bonus is sold," he
added.
Regionally, British Columbia
will have the highest increase in
renovation and repair spending
this year up 5.1 percent to $2.2 bil-
hon, and a 4.5 percent increases
next year to $2.3 billion. The prov-
ince will benefit from strong hous-
ing markets and a solid economic
recovery that fuels employment
and income growth.
In Ontario and Quebec, renova-
tion spending will improve next
year as the provincial economics
experience a boost from the recov-
ering manufacturing sector. Onta-
rio will be the leader next year
with $6.95 billion in renovation
spending while activity in Quebec
will amount to $4.4 billion.
Homeowner renovations fall into
five categories of spending: reno-
vations and alterations, structural
additions, repairs and maintenance,
replacement of equipment and new
installations.
