Dear Editor:
Congratulations to the South Huron Panther Field
Hockey Team and its coaches Jim Workman and
Linda Farquhar. Everyone is certainly proud of your
accomplishments. The long hours of practice, the
dedication, the respect for coaches and the persever-
ance show up in the way the Panthers perform on
and off the field. It is a great tribute to your school.
The OFSAA tournament was a very well orga-
nized event. The best 16 high school teams in Onta-
rio were here. Jim Workman and his committee
showed the rest of Ontario how a small town can
host an event of this size. The fields were in excel-
lent condition considering the weather - the grounds
Anew did* gnat jab. The banquet was exceptional.

was outstanding. The skits and displays showed
their skill off the field.
On the field, the top high school field hockey
teams pitted their skills against each other. Games
were close and very well played. In any competition
there are winners and losers, but in this tournament I
think everyone was a winner.
The spirit of the students at S.H. has been re-
kindled. The support, the attendance and the overall
behaviour at the games was mentioned by many
coaches. The weather was not the best, but you were
still there. South Huron is still the best!
Thanks again to the convener and organizing com-
mittee, the students, the community and everyone
involved. The whole show makes everyone proud of
our school and community.
Congratulations again to the Panthers on your
back to back championships. May the dynasty con-
tinue!

Hawks stomp Pests but
fall prey to host Mitchell
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
MITCHELL - A late goal with
just 34 seconds left .in the game
gave the host Mitchell Hawks the
win over the visiting Exeter Hawks
Saturday night in OHA'Junior De-
velopment League action.
An empty netter with four ticks
remaining on the clock made the fi-
nal score 5-3 for the defending pro-
vincial champions.
Exeter, who hammered the Bel -
mom Pests 10-1 the night before at
the South Huron Recreation Centre,
now have a west division record of
8-3.
Against Mitchell, the visitors
jumped into a 2-1 lead after 20
minutes on a pair of goals by vete-
ran forward Shayne Robinson. It
was 3-2 for Exeter after the second
as Sean' McCann scored but Mitch-
ell came on strong late in the final
frame.
Last night Mitchell came to town
and once again, Exeter is forced to
play the same team back-to-back.
"They (Exeter) have to stay fo-
cused and do all the little things
right," said Exeter coach George
Pratt in anticipation of last. night's
game in Exeter.
Hawks 10. Pests 1
Exeter had very little trouble on
Friday night in their own arena,
building up a 2-0 lead in the fust
before exploding for seven goals,
including their first shorthanded
marker of the season, in the second.
Rookie netminder Chris Lyndon
who sat out the previous couple of
weeks with an injured collarbone,
gave up the only Belmont goal with
3:12 left in the game.
When Marc Watson caught Lyn-
don out of the net, he prevented the
Exeter goalie from recording his
second shutout of the very young
1992-93 season.
"I was playing volleyball and I
cracked my collar bone," said Lyn-
don of his injury. He also played in
Mitchell -and -now has -a -goals
against average of less than three.
Lyndon, a Goderich native who
played for that town's midget team
a year ago, said he studies the art of
goaltending and admitted he want-
ed the shutout against Belmont.
"1 wanted that second one real
bad," he said.
While the Hawks have built a
reputation this season as being a
third period club, they only needed
40 minutes to knock off the Pests.
In the first, Nathan Burns and Ja-
mie Cornish scored for the Hawks,
but despite the cushion. Pratt wasn't
overly pleased with the effort of his
players.
"We came out pretty good but we
could have played better in that
fust period."
The second period offensive bar-
rage started just 1:02 into the mid-
dle frame when Sean McCann
teamed with brother Todd and Rob-
inson.
Just 40 seconds later, still on the
same shift, the trio made it 4-0.
Also scoring in the second were
Scott Smale, Robinson with two,
and Todd McCann.
Answering in the third for the
winners were Smale, Bums and
Todd McCann all clicking for the
second time and Marty DeBruyn
called up from the midgets snapped
a good wrist shot which ripped the
mesh.
Don Riley started in goal for the
Pests but give way to Steve Van-
duynhoven but Riley came back
later in the game.
It was a relatively mild game,
penalty wise as referee Brian Do -
natter whistled just five minor in:
fractions per team.
Exeter Hawks' Steve Farquhar (15) found himself iii an awk-
ward position Friday night as Belmont's Andy Gartlett had him
in -a headlock.
Irish take three of
possible six points
LAMBETH - It was a tough week for the Lucan Irish as they managed
just three out of a possible six points in OHA Junior Development League
hockey action.
Last Wednesday night they lost a-4-3 overtime decision to the visiting
Seaforth Centennaires. Jason Hayter popped the winner in overtime for the
Cents while Kirsten Carroll, Don Rivers and Wayne Schoonderwerd also
connected.
Answering for the Irish were Jay Jackson, Rob Davis and Greg DePrest.
Steve Watson was in net for the Irish.
Two nights later in Alvinston, the Irish came back to life with a big 10-1
win over the host Flyers.
Rookie Dwayne Price paced the Irish offence with four goals while
Steve Moore netted a pair with singles to Mike Reid, Jeremy Jemec and
Craig Brown. Defenseman Ed VanKerkoerle scored once and added two
assists.
Sunday in Lambeth, the Irish battled the Lancers to a 4-4 draw. Scoring
for the Irish were Price, Moore, Steve Matthews and DePrest. There was.
no scoring ys - he overtime.
