DASHWOOD - Michael Rau
of Dashwood is South Huron's
newest recipient of a Canada 125
medal.
Rau received the award from
the federal government for his
work with the Voyager '92 pro-
gram, a student exchange that
bring undemanding and fellow-
ship to geographically separate
areas of the country.
Rau became interested in be-
coming a volunteer with the pro-
gram after he urged his son to
apply for the exchange. When
told by MP Murray Cardiff's of-
fice that volunteer supervisors
were needed for the program, he
decided to use up some vacation
time to help with the exchange to
bassoommal
Northern Alberta.
Sixteen Huron Coanty students
travelled to the Athabaska region
of the province last August, and
tarred around to visit Banff,
Lake Louise, the Badlands, and
Edmonton over 10 days. Sixteen
of the students they billeted with
then came to Huron, and Rau
said it was the goal of himself
and co -volunteer Glenn Miller to
visit a different place every day.
The group saw the Welland
Canal, Niagara Falls, the Bruce
Nuclear Plant, Canada's Wonder-
land, and the Skydome and CN
Tower. Some of the students got
a kick out of calling their parents
home in Alberta from thepay
phones at the top of the tower.
Michael Rau with the certificates and Canada 1 5 medal
he received for his volunteer work with a 1992 exchange
program.
"Closer to home, we showed
off Huron County too," said Rau,
adding that the tour included the
Huron County Museum, Jail, and
the Lake Water Supply.
"The only part of the trip the
Canadian Government paid for
was the flights," said Rau.
A lot of support for the ex-
change came from local busi-
nesses and service clubs, such as
the Grand Bend and Exeter Le-
gions, the Exeter and Zurich Op-
timists, the Exeter 'Masonic
Lodge, and the Zurich Lions.
Rau said Cardiff's office staff
helped considerably as well.
A group photo was taken of
the whole group in front of Lake
Louise, and every student has a
copy of it, and Rau said that is a
treasured keepsake for all of
them.
"That is what the program was
all about. To see other parts of
Canada and see how other kids
are educated," he said.
Lasting friendships have been
started by the exchange, and
some students have already re-
turned to Alberta for a second
visit in the year since then, and
some from Alberta are deter-
mined to attend University in
Ontario.
For his part, Rau received a
certificate of recognition from
the federal government last
-week, and was then surprised to
:receive a Canada 125 medal.
Unfortunately, with the recent
changeover of the federal gov-
ernment, a planned November 27
ceremony to receive the medal$
from governor-general Ramon
Hnatyshyn won't go ahead.
Rau said he was also pleased
to learn the co -volunteer of the
exchange, Glenn Miller of Grand
Bend, also received a medal.
The Canada 125 medal repre-
sents only the third time a series
of Medals have been struck to
commemorate a national celeb-
tration.
The medal came with complete
protocol instructions on how to
wear the medal for dress occa-
sions. Rau humbly says he'll
probably just keep it in the box.
