LUCAN - Pete and Pat Van Cie-
teuken can .sell anyone thinking
about starting their own business
that the key to success lies in a
good business plan and pure pleas-
ure in what you do.
When owner Pete and wife Pat
decided to start Promechanical
Truck and Farm Repair this past
September; they first worked out a
detailed business plat,.
They prepared a business propo-
sal,
sal, did a traffic count to see how
many potential customers there
were and they checked how many
farms were in the area.
"We really did our homework," ',-
Pat said.
And starting the business wasn't
that difficult since Pete had most of
the tools andequipment he needed.
They now have a parts inventory of.
more than 500 items for service or
direct sales.
"For the past}two-years we have
been stocking lopiinventory," said
Pat.
The pair are no:fingers to the
business world having been in-
volved in successful ventures since
moving to Lucan eight years ago.
Pete owns a liquid manure com-
pany, Van Geleuken Agri Service
while Pat had her own accounting
business.
But when her husband wanted to
start the new business she decided
.to join him.
"He's not here during the peak
seasons of the manure business and
I enjoy doing the accounting
work," she said of her -decision to
work with him.
It also gives them time together.

"He sometimes works 14 -hour
days," Pat said.
And although it's - only tswtfiwo
months since PromeicaI
opened its doors for business,-'Nhc
company is by no means new to
customers.
Pete said•Promechanical basically
darted as a side -line to the liquid
,manure service. He would spend
any extra time he had repairing his
own equipment.
"Friends began asking me to
Kent Price on left
above, along with Tim
Segeren work on one
of the many tractors
repaired at
Piomechan'rcal. 'Below,
the pair along with
owner Pete
Van Gelevken,
second from right, and
wife Pat, stand in front
of the business that
opened in September.

When his client base expanded to
the trucking industry, the Van Ge-
leuken's realized the business was
outgrowing the small shop.
Pat said she can remember many
cold weekends that Pete spent ser-
vicing highway trucks outside be-
cause the vehicles didn't fit inside
the shop.
So they decided expand:
"It's always been a dream of his,"
said Pat.
"He has always had a natural
ability to work with his hands and
realty enjoys the work," she said.
Promechanical now employs a
full time 'licensed diesel mechanic
and one full time apprentice me-
chanic.
The shop they arc leasing has
four bays, a pit, and clearance on
two overhead doors for highway
trucks,
They perform regular service on
highway trucks for 20 clients, who
have anywhere from one truck to
truck fleets.
As well, they have more than 20
farm customers for whom they ser-
vice tractors, highway trucks, stake
trucks and other farm equipment.
They also do vehicle inspections.
They feel the key to their success
will lie in competitive service rates
and part prices, combined with
their easy accessibility - being on
the Main Street of Lucan - making
it easy for them to service clients in
North Middlesex area.
"It also helps to have a strong be-
lief in what you do," Pat said.
"Pete is dedicated to making this
business a success," she said.
