Do swami!. so but
a flu shot this fail?
TORONTO - For many people, getting the flu is a minor problem like
the common cold.
But for others, especially those 65 and more, it can lead to a serious,
even fatal illness.
About 300 people die each year in Ontario front influenza -related ill-
nesses. The majority - 85 percent - are over 65. in addition, the flu puts
25,000 people in hospital every year and costs us millions of dollars.
'Prevention is the best medicine, and you can be vaccinated against the
three main strains of flu germs expected to be around this winter. If you're
in a "high risk" group your flu shot is free.
High-risk groups include people over 65 and those who have serious
heart, lung or kidney diseases, diabetes or cancer, are infected with HIV or
have certain other serious conditions.
Also considered at high risk are all residents of Ontario'$ nursing homes,
homes for the aged and chronic care facilities. This year, the flu, vaccine is
also free to staff of nursing homes, homes for the aged and chronic care fa-
cilities who care for patients.
While the majority of seniors in institutions are vaccinated, the same is
not true for seniors living at home," says Dr. Monika Naus, a senior medi-
cal consultant with the Ministry of Health.
"We are quite concerned that only about 50 percent of seniors living at
home get flu shots. We would like to increase this to 80 percent in order to
provide as much protection as possible.
"If more people would get vaccinated, the number of influnza-related ill-
nesses would be greatly reduced," Dr. Naus says.
"It's very important that seniors take preventative measures to reduce the
risk of becoming sick, especially in the colder months ahead," says Jane
Leitch, president of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario. "I urge every
senior to ask his or her doctor about having a flu shot. For many, it can
make the difference between a winter of illness and a healthy season".
The best time to get your flu shot is from September to November. After
that, the flu season is in full swing. It begins some time in November (the
actual time varies from year to year) and lasts about six months.
"Because the flu vaccine does not contain live germs, it can't give you
the flu," says Dr. Naus. "The most common side effect of the vaccine is
soreness at the site of the injection. This usually last only one or two days.
And surprisingly, these symptoms appear less often in older people."
The flu vaccine poses no risk to pregnant women or the fetus. However,
anyone who has a severe allergy to eggs should not get a flu shot since the
vaccine contains a trace of egg protein.
A flu shot is needed every year because different types of flu viruses ap-
pear each year. The vaccine is changed each year to protect against the
strains expected to be circulating.
Each year, the World Health Organization and the Centres for Disease
Control in Atlanta predict which flu strains are going to be around the next
winter. This is based on which ones were most prevalent at the end of the
previous flu season.
Last year the Ministry of Health provided 1.5 niillion'free doses of flu
vaccine. If you are in a high-risk group for flu or work in a long-term care
facility, call your doctor or local public health department and ask about
the free flu shot.
