Mental training big part of program
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - Competition for the
elite athlete has change dramatical-
ly over the past ten years.
Mental training has now become
very important part for a team as
Ahoy prepare to compete against
-ethers of their very high calibre.
This past weekend, 22 of the best
14 to 16 year-old ringette players
were in Exeter for an exhibition
game, a banquet, shooting clinics
and practices.
Team Ontario, which includes
Hensall's Cara Gardner, is prepar-
ing for the 1995 Canada Winter
Games in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
"We've given each player a men-
tal and physical training program,"
said Team Ontario coach Bernie
Cockburn.
The girls come from across the
province and right now, they meet
once a month, but, come 1994, that
will be stepped up to three week-
ends a month.
Ten years ago, mental training
was not even considered as part of
the process to make a better team.
Now, however, it has almost_ be-
come a necessity.
"Mental training is really the art
Team Ontarfo's Cara Gardner, right; showed Exeter Optimist
petite player Krista Dayman how to shoot the ring during a
shooting clinic Sunday hosted by Team Ontario. Gardner of
Hensall and the rest of the elite team were in town for an ex-
hibition game, clinics and practice sessions of their own.
of thinking about what is going to
happen," explained Cockburn.
It gets the players tournament -
ready, and according to Cock-
burn, has a lot to do with a player's
home life. How they mingle with
their family, friends, did they eat
well, etc. is all part of the mental
training.
"Each person is different and
.what we try to do is try and find
what is perfect for them in order to
play the best."
Visualizing a certain play and if
it was done right, is also part of the
mental training.
Looking ahead: While -February
of 1995 when the Canada Games
will be held is a long time ahead,
Cockburn said getting Team Onta-
rio together so early, is very impor-
tant
He said the training program
which is necessary to play at such a
high level has to have all the men-
tal and training program.
Selection process for Team Onta-
rio began with six regional all-star
teams who were selected from
about 600 girls. The best were tak-
en off of the six teams and from
that, came Team Ontario.
"They have different habits. In
ringette we don't have a set place to
be yet as a ringette strategy. We
have what individual coaches
want."
Cockburn said he and the other
coaches have to change the thought
process of the girls and noticed
some of them may have .been pro-
hibited from doing what they are
really capable of doing.
Gardner plays defence for Team
Ontario and like all her teammates
in the big win against London Deb
'AA' Saturday night at the South
Huron Recreation Centre, seemed
focused on what she was doing.
"She's about the average of eve-
ryone here. What you have to re-
member is that every girl here is
exceptional. Cara is an exceptional
athlete," said Cockburn.
He said that during the selection
process every time he saw Gardner
play, Team Ontario were confident
she would be on the elite team.
"She's a natural athlete. She con-
trols the game of ringette."
Funding for Team Ontario comes
mostly from the girls and their fam-
ilies themselves. Sponsors such as
Itech help and so do such organiza-
tions as the Exeter and Area Rin-
gette Association who were very
generous in providing the banquet,
ice time told classroom time.
"It's just wonderful that an associ-
ation like Exeter will have us in to
do that," said Cockburn.
Price tag for Team Ontario up un-
til February, 1995 is about $92,000.
