Come -from -behind Hawks beat visiting Bulldogs 64 By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - The Exeter !:Hawks have a reputation in this 1993-94 OHA Junior Development League season as being a come -from - behind team. Down 5-'1 to visiting Mt. Brydges Bulldogs Friday night, the Hawks came back and won their sixth west division game of the season, an emotional 6-5 overtime victory. Added with a 7-3 win over Bel- mont on Saturday, the Hawks now have a 7-2 record in the west divi- sion. Friday, the large crowd at the South Huron Recreation Centre had Tots to cheer about later in the game including a tying goal, the winner and some strong goaltending by Darren Kints. In non sudden -death overtime, Sean McCann backhanded the puck past Darryl Reddy for the win. It was a powerplay goal as Mt. Brydges' Mark Willis went to the box for hauling McCann down with 53 seconds left in regulation time. "We're a good come -from -behind The Wrath of Grapes by Don Cherry CHERRY ANSWERS THE BASHERS OF CANADIAN HOCKEY I just don't understand the G.M. of the WINNIPEG JETS. Here he is being paid a good salary by the JETS, living in FLORIDA on CANADIAN MONEY and he is always putting the screws to CA- NADIAN kids. For example, in a great CANADIAN year, MIKE picks eight of his thirteen picks as EUROPEAN year after year. His teams are womped out of the play offs because in the play offs the ice follies are over (by that I mean the regular season). The real players, like MARTY MCSORLEY, GILMOUR, MULLER, LA- CLAIR step forward. I got nothing against TEEMU SELANNE, and you'd have to be nuts to say he's not a good scorer, but what happened in the play- offs? Now, here's another one for you, on their roster in the HOCKEY NEWS Year Book when 75% of the league are CANADIAN, 19 of THE JET'S 34 players are not CANADIANS. In other words, more ‘foreigners than CANADIANS. Now, I could see if JETS were in the finals or semi-finals all the time, but they can't get out of their di- . -The'JE'I'S on the road at the start of last year, had to get cattle ~prods to prod them on the ice in places like CHICAGO. So what does MIKE do? He goes and get two CANADIAN boys to put some guts on the team. KRIS KING and TIE DOMI come and they go on a tear and win two straight and the fans come out. A sell out because of these two guys. KRIS AND TIE will have their hands full this year and here's why. Look to their top prospects. Ya ready?? IVAN VOLOGZHANINOU NICOLAI KHABIBULIN YAN KAMINSKY BORIS MIRONOV YUKA YLONEN In fact MIKE SMITH has only drafted seven CANADIANS in two years. I love his statement. "The fact is, it hasn't been a CANA- DIAN game since 1972". Oh yeah, MIKE, the MONTREAL CA- NADIENS had eighteen out of twenty guys playing who were CA- NADIAN BOYS, and the other two were AMERICANS. Besides I thought we won in 1972? I see you doubting THOMAS's. Need some more convincing? How about when we won four out of five CANADA CUPS and three out of four WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS? ONTARIO won the world under 17 tournament plus CANADA won the PACIFIC CUP last year for the under 18's. Still think EUROPEANS are the best? Lets take a look at what happened last year in the N.H.L. as far as scoring goes. Because their not brought over to the N.H.L. to block shots, body check, hit, or God forbid, fight, right?, they're brought here to put points on the boards, so lets go.... The top ten goal scorers in the league (two EUROPEANS). the top ten defeacemen in the N.H.L. (zero EUROPEANS). The top ten assists scorers in the league (zero EUROPEANS). The top five goalies average (zero EUROPEANS). The top five save percentage m the N.H.L. (zero EUROPEANS). I know what you're saying, why is this guy against EURO- PEANS? Wrong! I am not against EUROPEANS, I'm for CANA- DIANS. I'm sick of the shaft we are getting from the N.H.L... when a EUROPEAN comes over here the SWEDISH FEDERATION gets over $200,000, and they get tons of dough because they can stay there and bargain. When MARIO LEMIEX and GRETZKY turned pro, their junior teams got $20,000. Imagine that! The N.H.L. has set up a committee to try to help THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION and their bids. Imagine that our money is going over to help them kids to come over here to take our kid's jobs. Coaches of the minor kids here in ONTARIO tell me it breaks their hearts to see a talented kid have go quit because the family can't af- ford to have him play. (Where is the committee for that kid?) And where is our government? Forget it! They're too busy giving our money to art and culture groups or money for track an d field where we'rethe only ones not on dope and so we finish last. (A waste of time, clean but no stood). I would just like to tool the money wasted on the inquiry of BEN JOHNSON and the Durkin Inqury put into hockey by the government. It's a damn shame, the only thing we're real- ly good at (oh yeah! tell me what else we dominate in like hockey,) and we're still getting the shaft by everybody. But take heart because even with all the slings and arrows, we're still the best by far. Just remember the STAN- LEY CUP CHAMPS? I'll say it agajn, "eighteen out of twenty on the CHAMPS were CANADIAN." HELLO! Are you listening out there??? Exeter 235.1314 'Wear what the Pro's Wes" team," said Hawks coach George Pratt. With 3:44 left in regulation time, and trailing by a goal, captain Dave Darlymple hit Ray Cousineau with a long pass and the winger went up the middle and beat Reddy ose-on- one. The pass could have been offside but it was a designed play in which Cousineau had to catch up the puck. "Cousy just busts up the middle," described Dalrymple of the play. "Shayne (Robinson) and I practiced it two years ago." The faceoff was deep in the Exet- er zone and on the draw, the puck went back to Dalrymple who had to make a quick decision in front of his own goalie. "It's kind of a gutsy play because you have to go in front of the net." Dalrymple • said that's the first time that the play has ever worked and local fans shouldn't be too sur- prised if it happnes a few more times this season. Junior D' hockey rules state that the five-minute overtime period is non sudden death which meant that after Sean McCann got what proved to be the winner, the Hawks had to kill over three minutes of time. "I just said we Iliad to be a little more conservative, play cautious," said Pratt. The last time the two teams met in Mt. Brydges, the Hawks came home on the short side of a 6-5 SCAM. In that one they trailed 4-1. but Friday they didn't want that to happen again so they played a strong third period. Exeter had lots of chances in the second period, popping 17 shots at Reddy but he only allowd a couple of goals which pulled the score to 5-3. "He made some good saves and our guys were a little frustrated," said Pratt. Steve Farquhar gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the first period but that slipped away to a four -goal defecit. Rookie Nathan Burns scored a pair to make it 5-3, the first of those coming off of a nice little backhand pass from Nick Szabo. Mark Livermore made it 5-4 be- fore Cousineau tied it and McCann gave the Hawks their sixth win. Exeter goalie Kirk Durand played well early in the game but struggled Mohawks blow lead, settle for a 5-5 tie EXETER - Nursing a pair of three -goal leads through the game, the Exeter Mohawks could only manage a 5-5 tie with visiting Bothwell Bullets Sunday night at the South Huron Recreation Cen- tre. With the tie, the Mohawks now have a 1-1-1 record early in the Southwestern Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League which they will take against the visiting Petrolia Victorians on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Despite having several key players out of the lineup against the Bullets, including defenseman Jeff Warren and forward Greg Snyder, the Mohawks leaped into a 3-0 lead not even six minutes into the game. Rob Warren who had an out- standing game for the Mohawks made it 1-0 followed by goals from Richard Hawkins and Jacques Beaulieu. But before the hosts could blink, it was a one -goal game. Exeter padded their lead in the second frame as Shawn Resume scored and then Hawkins got his second of the night converting a long pass from Kris Bedard. The Mohawks came out quick in the third as Scherer rattled the crossbar but as shakey Exeter de- fense saw the Bullets score back- to-back markers again, this time 19 seconds apart. Vanderydt and Scou Hope made it 5-4 and then very late in the game, Mark Lindsay stole the puck and put the game into overtime. Although the hosts had more shots in the five-minute overtime, neither team scored. in the opening minutes of the sec- ond period. He was replaced by Darren Kints, called up from the Exeter RSD Midget Generals to re- place the injured Chris Lyndon. Prau was very pleased with Kints who had to make some game win- ning saves. Now 6-0-1 Irish have a tough time with Belmont By Fred Groves T -A staff LUCAN - It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. Called an "ugly" victory by coach Ken Needham, the Lucan Irish skated to a slim 3-2 victory over the struggling Belmont Pests last Wednesday night. The Irish are known for habitually starting a game slow. It was like their normally charged eight -cylinder engine was sputtering on four. However a win is a win and Wednesday's victory, combined with a 4-1 win over host Seaforth Centenaires on Friday, left Lucan's OHA Junior Development west division record undefeated at 6-0-1. They'll try to improve upon that when they host the Centenaires tonight at 8:15 p.m. Against Belmont, Lucan scored just 3:33 into the game when Dwayne Price connected with a powerplay marker set up by Jeremy Jemec and Greg DePrest. Jemec was playing in his first game since the end of the 1991-92 season as he was with Listowel Junior 'B' Cyclones last year. Although the puck was in the Belmont end of the rink most of the first 20 minutes, it was only 1-0 at the•buzzer. Needham said a poor turnout at the Monday night practice might have been the reason for a poor showing Wednesday. "That could have been the problem. There weren't very many there. There was four or five guys with the (London Junior 'B') Nationals, some were sick and some were at school." Missing from Wednesday's game were Rob Davis who was sitting out a suspension, goalie Stuart Ashton, along with defensman Craig Brown were hurt, Keith Robson was sick and Scott Riddell was at school. Despite the somewhat depleted lineup, Needham said that wasn't an ex- cuse for playing poorly. "The guys we had in there we should have beaten them more than we did. It's not time to panic yet." The Irish came out strong in the second period and scored just 1:19 into the frame as Steve Moore .scored; but with 3:22 left, Belmont's Jamie Dance pulled the visitors to within one. Jemec had a good chance to give the Irish a two -goal cushion when he was at the goalmouth but waited too long and Belmont goalie Don Riley made the stop. Not shooting quick enough was very noticeable in the Irish shooters on Wednesday. ,,,,tvinix v'j'.t "We didn't finish at all," said Needham. In the third, Lucan went up on a Mike Reid goal and Bruce Hansford an- swered for the Pests. ' The main reason the Irish did win the game was because of the 26 saves goalie Steve Watson made. Many of those shots were possible goals and Watson really kept the hosts in the game. In the last minute of play, Belmont's Mike Smith stepped into the slot but Watson was there to shut the door. Earlier in the period he came up with a big glove save on Dance. "I think he'll get better the more he plays," said Needham of Watson who played for the Pt. Stanley Lakers of the east division last year. Both teams took a lot of penalties, but Lucan's it seemed to come at cru- cial times and they were getting two at a time. Fortunately, for the Irish, Belmont couldn't cash in on those opportunities.
