London panthers win WOSSA, take honest route to tournament By lied Groves T -A staff PARKHILL - When they get their chances, opportunities and their breaks, the South Huron Dis- trict High -School Panthers are very hard to beat. Sneaking in through a backdoor, the Panthers reached the finals of the Westem Ontario Secondary School Association girls field hock- ey championship and for the sev- enth straight year brought home the title. Saturday afternoon, the Panthers got off to a very quick start and dominated for most of the game as they handed the host North Mid- dlesex Marauders a 3-0 defeat. South Huron heads into the Onta- rin Federation Schools Athletic As- sociation final tournament this weekend in Exeter with a 20-1-3 record over the 1993 season. The only team to beat the Pan- thers are the Marauders in a 2-1 overtime win at the Waterloo tour- nament back in mid September. With a little revenge in mind, South Huron won on Saturday on the Ma- rauders home field. "We didn't have our whole team," said Panthers' Carla Taylor of when the two teams met in Waterloo. "We were missing Jana (Webster) and that really hurt and we had al- ready played three games before that," Webster, the Panthers goalie, did not allow the ball to get past her at the WOSSA tournament and along with fellow goalie Carolyn Quinn have recorded many shutouts this year. Also missing bac- k in September were Cara Gardner, and %those ab- sentees along with the fact it was early in the year, are reasons the Panthers lost to the Marauders. "That was the beginning of the season. We seem to build up strength as we go along," said South Huron coach Jim Workman. Quick attack: On Saturday in Parkhill, the Panthers' Danielle' Miners got a very good chance °in the first couple of minutes of play and it seemed to set the tempo of the game. Miners and Lynn Work- man scored in. dte'+#irst half and 'then early in the second, Jenny Ac- ton lifted the Panthers to a 3-0 lead. At WOSSA, the Panthers opted to play more cautious and instead EXETER FLOWERS EXETER 235-0111 Ben Hooggnboom GO - PANTHERS - GO PAT O'BRIEN LJPIi,,LSTERY 69 Londuti kti. Mensal!. It's more of a secure feeling," said Simpson. Both Simpson and Taylor were members of last year's provincial champions and are geared for mak- ing it two straight this week in Ex- eter on their own field. No free ride: Since the Panthers are hosting the OFSAA tourna- ment, they were guaranteed a spot from the beginning. However, none of the girls wanted it to be automat- ic. They, along with Workman and assistant coach Linda Farquhar wanted to get to the finale honestly. "It matters, we have to make it," said a serious Simpson. "It Looks so much better when we have a higher ranking." South Huron will probably go into the tournament ranked nurriliet one if not, then at least in the top three. Taylor, who left Saturday's WOS- SA final with a very sore ankle, simply said, "I like that we earned it." The WOSSA - tournament was somewhat of a nail-biting experi- ence for the Panthers as they had to play a waiting game after they went undefeated on Friday in their pool play. They battled Medway to a score- less draw and then beat Central El- gin 3-0. Miners had two goals in that game with the other going to Lynn Workman. Medway also beat Central Elgin by an identical 3-0 score which meant that the Pan- thers and Medway had to go to flicks following the Medway - Central Elgin game. Medway led 3-0 at the half against Central Elgin and only needed one more in the second half to eliminate the Panthers, but that did not happen. "It was really 'nerve wracking. They had three goals at the half and only need three to tie us," said Workman, in 'penalty flicks to determine a pool winner, the Panthers scored four times while Medway could not get the ball past Webster. nded) 4 "A ttmftt t "toe 40`° . esidential • Commercial Safes Security 23 Hr.
