How the Panthers became the defending charnpions
EXETER - Although the history of what can easily be called a'domi-
nating dynasty' for the defending provincial champions dates back to
1974 when coach Jim Workman fust brought the game of field hockey
to South Huron, it was 1982 when the big recognition became noticea-
ble.
That was the year the Panthers won both the Huron -Perth Conference
and the Western Ontario Sec-
ondary Schools Association
(WOSSA) crown.
For four consecutive years,
sidelines from 1982 to 1985, the Pan-
thers won both of those. It
wasn't until 1983 that the first
provincial championships were
held and that year South Huron
placed fourth.
In 1985, the Panthers fin-
ished between fourth and
eighth at OFSAA but did not make an appearance at the tournament in
1986 because they finished second at WOSSA.
enstinginning in 1987, the Panthers beca ne very well known across
the pace in their respective sport because they won both Huron-
Pcrth and WOSSA six straight years, from 1987 to 1992. is_
The Panthers brought the OFSAA title to the Town of Exeter in 1989
aid again in 1992.
On November 11, 1992, the headline in this newspaper read, "Pan -
by
1'red
Gruves
thers resuxe the roar." Last year South Huron had several girls who
had tasted victory in both 1989 and 1992.
One of those was 1992 captain Wendi Sims who was quoted as say-
ing, "it's the best way to end your high school career."
In 1991. the Panthers had a very talented lineup which disappointing-
ly bowed out in the quarter -finals at OFSAA. Ten girls graduated and it
looked as though 1992 would be a rebuilding year.
With standouts such as Sims, Jenny'Acton, Lynn Workman and Bre-
nyn Baynham, just to name a few, the Panthers marched to OFSAA
with pride.
It was a very cold night last fall when the fire truck was heard
'throughout Exeter and those who had played in their last high school
=pme, along with those who would be the Panthers stars of the future,
celebrated equally.
In last year's OFSAA final played in Toronto, the Panthers beat King-
ston LaSalle 24) and a hard fought 1-0 victory over Toronto's Stephen
Leacock.
It should be pointed out the two major differences between girls field
hockey and other high school sports.
In field hockey, the schools are not broken own into classifications
according to student population which meaasikst South Huron, nestled
in a town of 4,300 competes in OFSAAassj$t the pig schools from
Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener.
Other sports, such as volleyball and basketball have 'A', 'AA', and
'AAA' based on the size of school. Also, in field hockey, there ,s no
junior or sailor, grade nine girls play along side those in OAC.
South Huron has had several of its graduates go on and play at the
university level.
Marcie Ellison at London's University of Western Ontario, Leanne
Dietrich at Waterloo, Kendra Arthur and Carol Willis at Guelph, Sims
went to Brock and Tanya Riehl, the goaltender from both the 1989 and
1992 championship teams is practicing with the University of Western
Ontario.
Also, Dietrich, Arthur and Tina Campbell have represented the prov-
ince of Ontario and so has Bayntiam
who has helped the Panthers to a very
successful 1993 season thus far.
The Panthers 1993 Huron -Perth
Conference season was one of ups -
and -downs. They finished undefeated
at 9-0-1 but that tie was a scoreless
draw with St.Marys who they had
beaten quite easily 77-0 earlier in the
fall.
However, South Huron, who out-
scored their Conference opponents 40-
0, then beat Listowel in the semi-
finals 4-0 and St. Marys 3-0 to take
their 12 straight H -P title. •
