LUCAN - At the October 26
meeting of village, council, works
superintendent Doug Johnston re-
ported on progress being made to
alleviate the infiltration of water
problem in the sewers.
Johnston told council that Liqui
Force Ltd. had spent one day last
week immediately after a heavy
rain using cameras inside the sew -
ens to find out where the excess wa-
ter was coming from.
The works superintendent added.
"We have good pictures and its
amazing the extra amount of water

Thieves
:.::caught in
'Liquor Store
break-in
EXETER - In the early morning
hours of Friday, October 29, the
Zurich Liquor Store was broken
into and a quantity of liquor was
taken. The culprits were caught by
the St. Marys Police later that
morning.. Five adults and two
young offenders, all from the St.
-Thomas area are facing numerous
-bleak, enter and theft related charg-
:es. All of the stolen property was
recovered.
EI'he ExetettePP investigated a
iheak-in at t 'Hensall Livestri
..$ales Barn last weekend. Even
though nothing was reported stolen
from the premises, the culprits did
do considerable damage to the
v operty while gaining entry, say
police.
The OPP say the TerryAir build-
ing in Huron Park was broken into
on October 19 during daytime
hours. The thief made off with a
handheld radio transceiver. de-
scribed as an Icom ICA21(serial
number 038258).
Irish books
presented to
Lucan
Library
LUCAN On October 7. London
Middlesex MP Terry Clifford pre-
sented the village of Lucan with an
Irish book collection on behalf of
the Republic of Ireland. The collec-
tion was promised by the former
Ambassador of Ireland. Dr. E4ward
Brennan during a 1991 visit Lu -
Can.
The collection includes books
which deal with Irish life and cul-
ture.
This gift from the people of Ire-
land to the people of Lucan is in-
dicative of the very real bond that
exists", said Clifford. "Being of
Irish ancestry myself, it is very
gratifying to see that future genera-
tions will have a real understanding
of the heritage of Lucan."
Lucan reeve Tom McLaughlin re-
plied. " On behalf of the village , I
would like to thank Terry Clifford
for making this happen. There is a
huge Irish population in this area
and the books will be utilized by
many residents."
Claire Anderson, vice -chair of
the Middlesex Library Board add-
ed, " It's a thrill to have this kind of
contact across the ocean and 1 hope
that everyone makes use of, this
very generous gift."
"These books are a real asset to
the library because of the interest in
iigib culture," said Luean Library
supervisor Donna Atkinson.
Biddulp townhsip reeve Bart
French said the great collection of
books will be kept in the Lucan li-
brary but will be used as reference
- for W residents of Middlesex
1pttrtty.
we were able to locate. Very few
properties are not contributing with
surface water."
Johnston was instructed to con-
tinue with the camera work in as
many parts of the village as the
budget of 52,000 will allow. The
work completed in the Wilberforce
subdivision and on Langford Drive
is estimated to cost $900.
Reeve Tom McLaughlin said.
"i.et's have a look at the films Doug
has now and do as much additional
work as is financially possible. The
real solution will be the installation
of sump pumps."
Johnston agreed saying, " All will
likely have to install sump pumps
and try and get the water into the
stone sewers."
Councillor Bryan Smith reported
that a new supply of composters
had arrived and will be available at
the village -office for any residents
wishing to purchase same at $16
each.
Clerk Ron Reymer told council-
lors that debenturing of the sewer
system costs would be completed
in the very near future.
Although, Ontario Municipal
Board approval had been received
for debenturing of $1,670,000 for
the combined water and sewer ex-
tension prbgrams, only $484,000
will be required for the sewers and
the water debenture completed ear-
lier in the year was in the range of
$100,000.
The lower debenture figures are
due to the fact more property own-
ers than expected paid their water
and sewer levies in advance.
A grant of $18,700 has been re-
ceived from Jobs Ontario to assist
in the cost of renovations to the
swim pool change house and new
fencing around the tennis courts.
The contract for the pool change
house work was awarded to RMR
Cgnstruction of Lucan for
$46,035.68, including G.S.T. This
was the lowest of three tenders re-
ceived.
Car written off in Stephen
EXETER - Saturday a car driven
by Lisa Morlock of RR2 Crediton
went out of control on Stephen
Township Concession 8-9. Police
say the cause was a cat crossing the
road. The car left the roadway and
struck a tree. Both driver and pas-
senger, Heather Davies of Huron
Park, received minor injuries in the
accident. The car was considered a
write-off, report police.
Last Tuesday a pickup truck driv-
en by Marc Fowles of London went
out of control on loose gravel on
the south boundary road of Us -
borne Township. The truck slid off
the road and struck a utility pole.
No injuries were reported, but the
truck was severely damaged.
Last Monday, October 25, a car
driven by Carol Anne Scheel of
Kincardine collided with a Terraga-
tor driven by Melvin Rachar of
Tillsonburg. The accident occurred
on Highway 4 in Usbomc Town-
ship. Scheel received minor inju-
ries in the accident and her car was
demolished.
Over the past week, OPP officers
"have responded to six car/deer acci-
dents on local roads. Most of the
accidents occur in the late evening
and early morning hours in dark-
ness. The OPP are advising motor-
ists to be extremely cautious
around this time of year and to be
alert for "those glowing eyes near
the ditches"
