HENSALL - The economic de-
velopment committee in Hensall
has provided residents and service
groups with a forecast on future
growth in the village and how posi-
tive change can be achieved.
Dubbed a community pollabora-
tion, the development meeting last
Thursday introduced a framework
to buildup the downtown core and
revealed the results of a residents'
survey conducted last summer.
Guest speaker Joanne Walters, a
community development coordina-
tor for the town of Goderich, ex-
plained how the town implemented
a program to build up its downtown
over three years.
She talked about a Heritage Can-
ada Main Street Program which
created jobs, stimulated the local
economy and filled vacant store
fronts in the downtown core.
Although the program is no long-
er in existence, its premise is still
useful, she said.
"People have been attracted to
live, work and shop in the commu-
nity," Walters said.
She said that if Hensall wants to
adopt a similar project, the village
must first map out a plan.
Hensall would also require
someone to fill a role similar to
hers.
"My role in the whole process
has been to do a lot of the leg work
for the committee," she said.
That, she said, includes trying to
keep the big picture in focus.
"Everyone has to agree to head in
the same direction," she said.
And a sense of direction is what
Hensall's economic development
committee is trying to plot.
Results of their eight page survey
showed that people would like to
see the village population expand
'to 2,000 residents in order to better
support local business.
They would also like to have a
swimming pool as part of existing
recreation facilities.
Weaknesses listed for the village
included lack of retail outlets, poor
community participation and lost
revenue duo to out-of-town shop-
ping in Exeter and London.
The committee conducted the
survey in order to get a sense of
what activities and kinds of growth
residents would support.
