Arboretum to be
planted in Crediton
CREDITON - The Ausable-Bayfield Conservation
Authority, landowners, municipalities and the Prov-
ince of Ontario have been working together to plant
trees to improve our environment since 1953. To
recognize this partnership, the ABCA is planting an
arboretum at Crediton Conservation Area and
holding a dedication ceremony on November 7 a
2 pan.
On November_2.. a.ciass from South Huron
District High SeiooI in Exeter will be planting
over 30 trees that vltill.icomprise the main arbore-
sum: he ceremony on November 7 wili..include planting four trees
;by vcpeeaentatives of the local landowners,. the ABCA, municipali-
ties and the Province. A sign will be unveiled and people will have a
chance to learn about the trees that have been .planted. Refreshments
will.also be served.
While commemorating 40 years of planting trees, the arboretum
will fulfill two other important functions. Firstly, school and interest
groups can use the area for tree identification lessons. Secondly,
most trees in -the arboretum are sold through the ABCA's programs,
so that down the road, people can see what the maturing trees will
look like before they purchase the seedlings or trees.
"We chose Crediton Conservation •Areas for a few reasons. It's
', 1 ty's area_of jurisdiction. it's highly visible on
pi .lr'ttamdiinpigwlral€part of Hay Stew, a provin-
c y > nrfrtant; -wetland where the Authority planted trees through
' our programs or have an interest in trees," said Monk. Anyone wish-
ing to attend, should call the ABCA at 235-2610 by November 4.
"We're preparing a brochure on the arboretum which includes in-
formation on the trees, where they grow best and their uses," said
Monk. The brochure will be distributed that day and will also be
available from the administration centre at Morrison Dam CA.
The Authority's local efforts in tree planting started in hay Swamp
in 1953. By that time, much of the swamp had been cleared for
farming.
By 1956. the Authority had pumhaaed 1,231 acres in Hay Swamp,
a 300 acre Shipka area tract and 600 acres in Bosanquet and West
Williams townships for Agreement Forests (owned by the Authority
and managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources - the farmer De-
partment of Lands and Forests).
To get young people involved in tree planting, the ARCA atga-
nized Arbour Days in different watershed municipalities. They also
purchased a tree planting machine which was supplied free of cost to
any watershed resident who wanted to plant an area of four acres or
more. One cent per tree was paid to landowners who planted trees
by hand.
This year. the Authority was involved with the planting or distri-
bution of 360.000 trees throughout the 1,000 square mile area of ju-
risdiction.
"We can all be proud of the forty years that landdwners have been
planting trees with the Conservation Authority. We hope to get a
good crowd of people out to help us celebrate," said Monk.
