Power -saver month 1:8U help consumers save money and 4isiiitgy `By Catherine O'Br en T•A staff EXETER - As the month of Oc- tober comes to an end so does the intensive promotion of energy- saving devices. Many Canadians know that for the past four years, October has been dubbed power -saver month. During the month, energy saving items are sold at special prices to encourage consumers to make their homes more energy efficient. "October was chosen as power - saver month so that consumers can c'nsciously evaluate their energy- saving efforts as we approach the peak power demands of the winter season," said Elyse Allan, director of energy services for Ontario Hy- dro. The promotion is a combined ef- fort between Ontario Hydro and 13 major retailers including local stores such as MacLeans Home Hardware and Canadian Tire. "Our customers are taking advan- tage of the special savings to keep the cold out and the heating dollar in their pocket," said Pete •Arm- strong, a representative of Ma- cLeans. ro Much of the energy consumed in Canadian households is wasted through inefficient house designs as well as inefficient furnaces, water heaters and appliances. Power -saver promotions provide consumers with discounts on more than 25 energy-saving products. "People are carefully reading packaging, looking for anything that can save them a bit of money," said Terry Schwartzentntber, store manager of Exeter's Canadian Tire. Items available during the cam- paign range from energy-efficient light bulbs, to water -saving shower heads and faucet aerators as well as bigger items such as insulation, ap- pliances and gas fireplaces. "The most popular item bought during. the campaign is the energy- efficient light bulbs," said Schwartzentruber. Pete Annirtrongof MacLeans holds :a newly marketed compact,`i011173s cent bitib tt atftie am -had a promotion :along with cittaeriterns. Tony,Sciswetshantnaber, store manager of Canadian Tire, says the sales of light bulbs during the promotion are always high. "It's a.popular item," he said. i a 15 Pcs. of Original Recipe or film Tasty Crispy Chicken, Large Fries and a 6IjnI Gravy "One of the greatest advances is the newcoqtltlent light bulb which 'files long," Armstrong said. The bulb .nnly takes 15 watts of power for 60 watts of light. Allan said the campaign is ex- pected to save Ontario's 3.5 million residential electricity customers about 55.25 million in hydro bills. That's up 5500,000 from last .. yam. Ontario Hydro points out a num ber of items that can make the home more energy efficient. They include: • .motion detector lights that turn lights on only when movement is detected; • dimmer switches which give the consumer the option of reducing tithe intensity of light. This not only reeduces to amount of energy used, ilibut helps extend the life of the 'bulb; • timers can turn appliances and lights on when needed and off when not in use; • energy-efficient shower heads can save 28,000 litres of hot water a year by cutting hot water use by at least one-third without -sacrific- ing the quality of the shower; • there are also different types of insulation that can be used around the home to save money; • electrical outlet seals help with I heat loss through -air leakage in plugs and switches along outside walls; ',ceiling fans will keep rooms cool in the summer by drawing hot air upwards and can be reversed in r LU1 DI Irr the winter to blow hot air which us- es back down again. "Consumers are learning that en- ergy saving is a lot like recycling. If we each do our part, There's truly a significant positive impact on en- ergy conservation and the environ- ment," Allan said. \V1 IM Ails MIXl'D'( Speciah7in posers tale to width Exeter Times - Advocate Exeter 235-1331 INVESTMENTS 01C/RSP 1 Yr. - 5.125 3Yr. -5.60% 5 Yr. - 6.50% Segregated Funds 1 YR. -15.39% 2 YR. - 11.76% 3 YR. - 14.00% .
