BRYDGES - With several players attending a wedding, the Exeter Hawks dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Mt. Brydges Bull- dogs Saturday night. After winning their home opener on Friday, the Hawks now have a 2-1 record in the OHA Junior De- velopment League west division. At the South Huron Recreation Centre, the visiting Flyers were no match for the Hawks who skated to a 10-3 win. The Flyers will try to get a little revenge when they revis- it Exeter on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Against the Flyers, the Hawks dominated early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period and stretched that to 6-2 after 40 minutes. "I was impressed tonight with the way things went. It was close there for a bit. They, worked hard in the third period and it paid off," said Hawks coach George Pratt. With. Dave Dalrymple and Na- than Blight both absent from the game, and•Greg Dalrymple still in- jured, the Hawks had just four de- fensemen. But winger Shane MacDonald moved back and took a regular shift on the point where he did not look out of place. "He filled in well on defence for us. He's a good versatile hockey player," said Pratt. Leading the Hawks offence Fri- day night was the talented line of Shayne Robinson, Sean McCann and Todd McCann. The trio ac- counted for half of the team's 10 goals. Robinson had a great night with three goals and a pair of assists while the McCann brothers each hada goal and four set ups. The big line did not score in the first period and at times, there looked like there might have been a little frustration. To compensate, Pratt made sure they got lots of ice Dropping the puck to start the .2993.94 Exeter Hawks season Friday night was former Hawks' coach Ron Bogart.Heguided the club to the championship in 1977 and the Hawks are shoot- ingfortthe:title this year. Also takingpart in the ceremony was Hawks' president Tom McCann who helped drop the puck between Exeter's Sean McCann, left; and Jason Wagner of the Al- vinston Flyers. time so they could get going. "The biggest problem they had in the early going, was they weren't head -manning the puck. We just told them to look for the head -man guy and things will work out," -said Pratt. Rookie Mark Livermore who had two goals, started the game's scor- ing off of some nice work from Brian Gardner along the boards and early in the second frame, Liver- more stayed with a loose puck to beat Flyers' netminder Matt Dan - brook. "He played a year of Junior 'C' with Wingham a couple of years ago. He's an asset to the team and he handles himself well," said Pratt of Livermore. Also scoring for the Hawks were Scott Smale and Steve Farquhar. Answering for the visitors were Jeff Bloomfield, 'Rick Jackson and Blair Maclnnis. Bloomfield's goal, midway through the, second period, bn*e a scoreless streak of nearly '90 min- utes by the Hawks and ride goal- ie Chris Lyndon. Fairweather nets two as Irish top Pests 8-3 BELMONT - Down 3-1 at the end of the first period, the Lucan Irish re- grouped and came back to beat the host Belmont Pests 8-3 Saturday night to open their OHA Junior Development League west division schedule. The Irish will take that win into tonight's game when they host the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs in Lucan's home opener which begins at 8:15 p.m. Against the Pests. Lucan scored three times inthe middle period to make it 4-3 before exploding for four goals in the.third. "Most of the goals came from hard work," said Irish manager Ken Free- man. 'The fast period we were slow and coming off a week off didn't help." .Lucan rookie Dan Candy opened the Irish scoring as he teamed with vet- eran blueliner Ed VanKerkoerle and goalie Steve Watson. VanKerkoerle, third on the team in scoring last season, had a big five point net as he scored once and set up four others. Rookie forward Shaun Fairweather had two goals with singles from cap- tain Andy Ross, Dave Mancari, Steve Moore and Steve Matthews. Manca- ri. a 15 -year-old defensemen added two assists and Sunday played for the London Junior 'B' Nationals. Balsdon to wear a black belt n Saturday, Jeff Balsdon will go through a process that so many others have gone before him. But for the Exeter native, it will seem like he is the only one. At the Town Hall m Exeter, he will be the guest of honour at a special karate ceremony. Balsdon is getting his black belt. What is surprising about this event, is that Balsdon is only 19 which is somewhat young to be reaching such a high pla- teau in karate. Reaching this peak was not simply just a matter of going to karate school a couple of times a week and going home and practicing. No, it was much more and like any other major ac- complishment it took a combination of physical and mental preparedness. When Balsdon receives his black belt on Saturday in front of his peers, who now .will consider him an equal in the karate world, he will be able to look towards a long future as a black belt. The past has come with hard work. Balsdon had to write a 2,000 word essay on the impact of karate in today's society. Recently I heard of a youngster, a lot younger than Balsdon who used a karate kick, in a classroom against a fellow class- mate. I don't know any further details and I don't really want to. Last year I heardnf a young man using a karate kick during a hockey game. Hockey is dangerous enough but using karate with skates on,7hat's scarey So I wonder malty what Balsdon wrote about and what the impact actually is. When the wrote ;his essay, Balsdon used some references Own Sense Richard Kim's took and it was Kim who joined BUladon itatatunmer camp. "I:hadto attend summer camp in Guelph with Sensei Rich- .andKimand he's a ninth degree black belt," said Balsdon. Mete camp, Balsdon had 11) go in front of a panel of black taks, mostly fourth degree or higher and perform several dif- taunt katas Kata is a series of movements by the student Which is graded. fie had to do three open hand katas and three weapons kata. Thevweapons he worked with at the camp were the bo, the sai and the tonfa. Balsdon admits he prefers the bo. The South Huron District High School graduate has been a karate student at Tyndall's Karate School since he was 12 years -old and in just seven short years, has reached the level of black belt. Probably about Thursday, Balsdon will begin to get nervous about Saturday's ceremony but he seems to be prepared as he has seen other black belt ceremonies. "I have to pour saki forrthe black belts into small glasses," he explained. There will also be other traditions which date back centuries t`Uke drinking out of a bowl and pmstenting the Dew black belt + a belt and a sword.+► It's a mad which only a select;faw.have gone before but one in which Balsdon will soon travel. Give the Toronto Blue Jays a little credit in picking up Paul Molitor. The last time I looked he was near the 210 hit matte during •the regular season and as far as post -season is con- cerned he's leading the hit parade. In the first two games of the series with Chicago, Molitor was .667 while sluggers Rickey Henderson and Roberto Alomar hitless. With Molitor, who looks like he is in a 'zone' all the time, I wonder if Toron- to fans have forgot about Dave Winfield. From the sidelines:—Big congratulations to Mikala Mac- Dougall of Exeter. MORE DAYS 4`41.o HOOK H -P record now 7-0-1 Ely Fred Groves T -A staff' EXETER - There was little doubt what was on the mind of the Marys Salukis when they came to town last Tuesday. Their main objective lvae to pre- vent the defending girls high school provincial cbampions from scoring. Although the host South Huron Panthers dominated the . entire game, they could not score and as a result, the Salukis and the Panthers battled to a scoreless tic in Huron - Perth Conference field hockey ac- tion. Earlier this year, the Panthers travelled to Si Marys where they easily won 7-0. Tuesday it looked as though St. Marys came more • prepared to play. "I think St. Marys came with the intention we weren't going to beat them one way or the other," said South Huron co4ch Jim Workman who hinted the Panthers might have been a little disappointed with their effort. Most of the game was played within the St. Marys 25 -yard, line and while the hosts were definitely on the offence, it was clear to sec Matin Strang, left; of the Panthers tries to get to the tall against St. Marys during #fat Tues- day's uesday's game. Looking on is Carla Tay)or. the Salukis were on the defence. "They played a lot of our body I thought. It's not a body contact sport," said Workman. Perhaps the easiest way to score a goal in field hockey is through the proper execution of the penalty cor- ner. A penalty comer is awarded to a team when the opposition com- mits an infraction within their own goal circle. "If that's at the international level, those arc goals. That should be one shot out, stopped and then hit right away," explained Workman. "That's normally a goal." South Huron had more than a dawn penalty corners which Bre- nyn Baynham took and managed to get out to the front of the line .but St. Marys never allowed a goal. Baynham did p good job getting the ball to the fust line of attack and only a couple of times did it go behind that group of girls. When it alid, the Salukis couldn't pick it up 'qhs the Panthers were right on it and kept it in the St. Marys zonc. South Huron con- cludes the regular H -P schedule when they travel to Mitchell on Thursday. Workman said the gatue against St. Marys did, in the long run, prove beneficial for the Panthers. "We got a good workout which is unusual. It was good for us." Cara Gardner who plays the cen- tre of the field for the Panthers had a strong game on Tuesday and con- trolled the bald very well. "She's very fast and she's got a good reach," said Workman. Playoffs for Huron -Perth are Tuesday, October 19 where the Panthers hope to make it 11 Con- ference titles in a row.
