next summer for competition
HENSALL - Wayne 'Ingram is
proof positive that hard work gets
rewarded.
The 16 -year-old sharpshooter is
among 18 cadets from across Cana-
da that will be off to an internation-
al rifle competition this summer at
the Risley Range in England.
A Master Warrant Officer with
the Royal Canadian Army Caileet
Corps 2923, Humn Park, Ingram
will be the only cadet in the unit
who will be participating in the
week long competition.
It has been more than five years
since a Huron Park cadet has made
the team.
Ingram said it's hard work to get
to the Bisley competition. Shoot-
ing, he said, is mental work com-
bined with natural talent.
"Pulling the trigger is only 10
percent of it."
He said other elements can factor
into this precision Spon such as
heart rate, weather and mental atti-
tude.
"You have to learn not to let a
bad match get to you and that's
tough."
Ingram said there are two ways
that fie practices.
"You can physically do the prac-
tice shoot or go through the the
match in your head."
The latter, he said, is called men-
tal visualization.
"This teaches the subconscious
how to shoot so you don't have to
think abut pulling the trigger."
The Grade 11 student at South
Huron District High School said he
can usually get 46 of 50 shots at an
18 inch bulls eye.
Over the years, Ingram said he
rapidly improved his score and is
now at the toughest point.
"A bot of people can shoot for
years and never be able to add to
their score," he said.
That's the level he has reached
and is striving to surpass.
He uses a .308 calibre, single -
shot rifle and shoots at distances
from 300 to 1,000 yards.
During the winter he will practice
at shorter ranges to keep his skills
sharp for the Bisley competition.
Prior to cadets, Ingram said he
could only hit a target that was 100
yards away.
"Cadet training really improved
my ability," Ingram said.
He joined cadets when he was 12
and has been interested in rifle
training since the onset.
And last year after a shooting
competition near Ottawa at the
Connaught Ranges he placed 12th
against some of the best marksmen
in the Royal Canadian Army Cadet
Corp.
But accuracy in shooting is not
the only criteria needed to make the
)3isley team.
"Attitude is just as important," he
e summer trip will first take
sa
Ingram and the team to Ottawa for
two weeks of practice before the
four week trip to England.
Then it's back to Ottawa for an- k
other two weeks to participate in
the Dominion of Canada Rifle As-
sociation Competition.
But while in England Ingram said
his team will be busy competing as
well as training with British Cadets,
the British Royal Marines and tour-
ing facilities.
"I'm really proud to have been
chosen to represent Canada," In-
c gram said.
