County legions present military display
GODERICH - More than 200 people are expected
on Thursday to attend the gala opening of the Huron
County Museum's display called the Military in Hu-
ron.
This display has been In the works for several
months and is basically a combined effort between the
museum and the Royal Canadian Legion branches in
the county.
Claus Breeds, curator of the museum said the pur-
pose of the display is to honour not only the 10
branches but their memberships as well.
"We've got a fine budget of about -$16,000 to put
this exhibit together. It's a legion exhibit that they are
putting together," said Breede.
He said there is an exhibition committee which has
representatives from each branch. That committee has
been meeting monthly for the past year.
Thursday's events will include a parade, dinner and
the officiul opening to be attended by the Lt. Govern-
or.
On display will be over 50 'mannequins dressed in
military uniforms which have been loaned from the le-
gion branches. In addition there are over 200 medals
which will be mounted and the Victoria Cross, award-
ed to Cpl. Harry B. Miner will also be on display.
Miner was awarded the medal in August of 1918
during World War I.
"He's originally from Cedar Springs but came up to
Huron County and was posted with the 161 Huron
Battalion," explained Breede. "He's written up in all
kinds of books."
The Clinton Legion, named their branch after the
distinguished soldier and they areloaning Miner's Vic-
torian Cross to the museum's exhibit.
"It's really outstanding to have a Victorian Cross, it's
very rare. There were only 161 given out to Canadi-
ans."
The Military in Huron exhibit will be at the museum
until February 7.
