CLINTON - Despite protest
from one trustee, the Huron County
Board of Fducation has -agreed to
pay the transportation costs from
the airport for visiting teachers on
an exchange program,
The board has been offered 10
spaces in a two-week teacher ex-
change program with Kent County
in England.
"I don't think we should pay any-
thing," said trustee John Jewitt.
He said the visit is for their own
personal growth So the board
shouldn't be- required to pay extra
transportation costs.
But trustee Doug Gamiss said we
do it for visiting students -Bed Ar-
nold Mainers said the exchanging
board is paying airport transporta-
tion for our teaciters.
"We derive significant develop-
ment from this," said Paul Carroll,
education director. He said their ed-
ucation system is a bit more ahead
of Ontario's so their visit will en-
hance education curriculum in Hu-
ron County.
The exchange is expected to take
place on their Faster break and dur-
ing our summer break.
The cost 'will depend on how
many teachers and their spouses in
tend to visit the county.

"They've wanted it for several

CLINTON - The Huron Soil and
Crop Improvement Association is
announcing a new award to recog-
nize farmers who demonstrate
good stewardship practices.
The award, to be called the
"Good Steward Award", is to -rec-
ognizeHuron County farmers for
, their strong commitment in their
roles as stewards of the land. -How
a farmer manages his entire farm
operation to protect the environ-
ment and conserve natural resourc-
es on the farm will be considered.
Some of the farming practices
that will be considered are:
* soil and water conservation
practices;
* efficient use of crop inputs
such as the use of soil testing and
feed testing;
" the safe handling and storage
new award
of hazardous material such as fuel,
fertilizer or pesticides
No single farm practice alone
will provide the basis for receiving
the award, but a whole farm ap-
proach will be considered for the
award.
The Association is stressing: [het
the award is not a competition be-'
tween farmers, but rather a recog-
nition of the stewardship efforts of
farmers, and thus more than one
award may be presented each year.
To nominate someone, contact
either Larry 'Plaetzer, Awards
Chairman (526-7121) or the=Onta-
rio Ministry of Agriculture and
Food office in Clinton. The dead-
line for nominations is October 15.

award contact the OMAF office in
