PARKHILL - Cool and confi-
dent.
That's how the Exeter Hawks
looked Friday night as they skated
to a decisive 7:0 win over the
North Middlesex Stars in the open-
ing game for:both OHA Junior De-
velopment League clubs.
The Hawks who were undefeated
in all four pre -season .games, will
try and make it two straight on Fri-
day in their home opener when they
host the Alvinston Flyers at the
South Huron Recreation Centre .at
8:30 p.m.
it was a 3-0 game after 40 min-
utes butlhe-Hawksexpioded-in.he
final period for four big goals past
Stars' goalie Andy Glavin who
seemed to have little .help late in
the game.
While the Exeter offence worked
its magic at one end of the pond,.at
the other, rookie, goalie Chris Lyn-
don turned away 30 shots in a bril-
liant display to.notch the shutout.
"He _kept- us: in the game. Chris

served the ..shutout," said Exeter

fully by Friday, he'll probably get
the start against the Flyers.
The Hawks got a couple of nice
surprises in their opener as second -
year defenseman Nathan Blight
played well and rookie Steve Far-
quhar and veteran Ray Cousineau
did a good job killing penalties.
"He (Blight) gets into the play.
He doesn't lay back and he makes it
happen," said Pratt.

Glavin.
Less than a minute after Cousi-

including leftwinger Scott Smale
who surprisingly has not played

LUCAN - The pre -season came
to an end for the Lucan Irish
Wednesday night and although they
won just three of their seven OHA
Junior Development League exhibi-
tion games, they head into their
regular season with • a little more
confidence than originally expect-
ed.
While it looked early in training
camp that only seven players from
last year's club would be returning,
last week that number swelled to
ten. .
Jason Glasser, Steve Moore and
Steve Matthews are all late arrivals
.and1hey1l.be a big help to the team
as they bead to Belmont on Oct. 9
for:their season opener against the
'Pests.
"Glasser's got that good speed
and -Matthews has the experience.
-He's got two years here and one in
.Strathroy," said Irish captain Andy
Ross.

After a pair of years with the
Irish, Matthews skated for the Jun-
ior '13' Blades last year but is now
wearing the green and white of the
Irish.
Neither Glasser or Matthews
were in last Wednesday's lineup but
Moore had two goals and an assist
in a big 8-1 win over the Wellesley
AppleJacks.
Lucan coach Ken Needham is
also pleased to sec the return of
Matthews.
"It's going to add some size and
strength to the right wing. He's a
big kid and he's come back ready to
play," said Needham.
There"4s a lot of youth on the
1993-94 edition nfthe lush.
"I think we're going to take it one
game at a time.' We've got a lot of
kids and that's good for the organi-
zation," said Ross entering his third
year as the Lucan captain.
Quick goal: The Irish opened the
scoring very early against the Ap-
plelacks on Wednesday ais Greg
DePrest scored just 45 seconds, into
the game.
It was 2-0 late in - the first :f ame
as third -year .winger Scott Rtitildall
let go with a soot -from his Acmes
that gotpast,AdanfDriedzyg.
Moore's fust of :two Iselin sec-
ond period-made.it 3=0. Irathetthird,
DePrest notched his .second fol-
lowed .'y .sillies off 'the blades of
Moore along with rookies Dwayne
Price and Travis Stinchcombe and
Ross rounded out the scoring.
Mark Hickson started in net for
the Irish and did not allow a goal,
turning away 20 shots in the 33
minutes he played. Stuart Ashton
came on and only allowed a goal to
Scott Snyder as he made 15 saves.
The two were battling for the sec-
ond spot behind Steve Watson who
last year played for the Port Stanley
Lakers of the east division.
"We don't know if we've got that
stopper," said Needham who had a
very tough choice to make between
Hickson and Ashton.
What the Irish do have this year
is a lot -Of youth to <,go 'with their
veterans.
"These-1dds r," said
Needham. "lam year+we had a lot
of 18 and 19 year-olds. .Once we
get going they'll be good-"te added
of the youngsters.
While the Irish have always been
one of the .premier teams in the
.league, this year just might be an
average season as several veterans
fade from the picture .and rookies
will be very noticeable.
But as pointedtout .by Ross, "we
aren't defending lathing. We're just
another team in .the ,league and
'there's no pressure "
Lucky charms: Wednesday's
.game was a very quick one as it
.;took less than two hours to play.
'There were only six minor penal -
lies whistled against each team.

Last year: 17-21-2 (Jth)
Coach: Jim Walker

between the pipes and he brings a 4.53 GAA average .with him. Manager

besides Baldacchino, they have 16 year-old John Finlay in net. Tom Walk-
er (13-34-47 in just 26 games) returns and he'il be counted on to provide a
lot of offense. Also back are Rob Fletcher and Bart Chinnick.
The Lancers are always a competitive team which finishes in the middle

Last year: 32-7-1 (2nd)
Coach: Jack Chaffc
Up ahead: The Hawks defeated Lucan in the west division finals and
then went on to win the OHA tide over Thtunesford. Their sttrength will be
up front as they return' Kory Dietz 34.28-62), Rob Boville (29-28-57)
along with Rob Jarmuth, Craig Quipp, Dan Boyd, Janet Keller and Josh
Lam bourn.
The biueiine is strong with five veterans in brothers Jeff and Jeremy
Smith, Denny Horan, Ryan Kipfer and Luke Smith. Of those, Jeff Smith
was the workhorse, playing in all 40 games and scoring 12 goals plus add-
ing 34 assists.
With Dietz and Bovillc leading the offence.and a smart coach in Chaffc,
the Hawks are definitely a threat to repeat.
410x Stars'

the London Junior 'B' Nationals a year ago. Lost to Junior 'B' clubs are
Dwayne Hay on Bergman and Derek Bloomfield. Only five skaters
and two goaliEll return and of those Paul Marcus (13-2841) will be count-
