"Since then, we've made nature trails, planted trees and shrubs for wild- life and erected bird boxes," said Kate. "Every year the area changes as the plants grow and the ecosys- tems evolve." Hikers have their choice of two trails; one loop takes about an hour to complete, and the shorter option takes about 40 minutes. "People can walk along at their own pace," Kate says. "and increase their knowledge of the environment. From 2-5 p.m. staff members will be at points of interest to talk about some of the area's special features." Six different types of habitat can be seen at the Bannockburn Wild- life Management Area: deciduous forest, coniferous forest, a wet ce- dar community, an old field with mixed scrub, and the Bannockbum River itself. Hikers are invited to bring along.. a mug for the hot and cold cider that will be served; crisp autumn applies Will be distributed as well. A lot of families and groups join the hike. "It has become a tradition for many people, and ever year were joined by lots of new hikers too. I admit that last year's snow- fall was less than ideal for the hike, but this year will be much better. It's a great day for people to get together and Team a bit more about their area and what they can do for the environment," conclud- ed Kate. Bannockburn Wildlife Area is located two kilometres north of Huron County Road 3, between Varna and Brucefield. To find out more about the hike, call the Ausa- ble-Bayfield Conservation Authori- ty at 235-2610.
