LUCAN - Experimentation is
the -name of the game for Lucan
Irish coach Ken Needham . as fie
hones down his lines in pre-
season play. ,The constant switch-
ing of players and goalies fast
week didn't make tor good results
eiitthe scoreboard, but Needham is
confident the team will do much
better when it opens the official season on October 9
in Belmont.
Last Wednesday, the Irish posted a 7-5 loss against
Thamesford, a 6-2 loss when they met them again
Friday, and a 5-2 loss to Wellesley on Saturday.
The Irish did win their second -last exhibition game
Sunday evening against Burford, 5-4. Goal scorers
were Rob Davis, Keith Robson, Steve Matthews,
and Greg DePrest with two.
The last of seven pre -season games will be against
Wellesley tonight.
"I think were going to be fine," said Needham,
saying thee -louses didn't really concern him.
Not only were many of the players unfamiliar with
1:teir teammates, but Needham was.also experiment -
ling with three goalies forthe team's number two
ogoaltender. Steve Watson was released -from Port
Stanley last weekand has now been confirmed as the
Irish's top puck stopper. Needham said his final
:mitoice to put in net is now between Mark Hickson
nand Stuart. Ashton.
Needham confirmed that Steve Moore will be back
this season "forsure", rejoining Greg DePrest on one
ofJast year's top lines.
"Don'tfix it if it.ain't broke," joked:Needham, who
alsosaidIrish fans will be glad to hear.Jason:Glasser
isalso.back in green and white.ihie fall.
• Those who watched any of the:Irish's-pre-season
games 'will :have seen many penalty .calls, while
Needbamaaid many of she.players were still fighting
forests on their teams and' were quick to anger, tie
said the referees were calling everything in sight.
Changes to the Junior Development League rule-
book are making the difference.
Saturday's game against Wellesley took over -three
hours, mainly because of frequent penalty calls and
stops of play.
"The -guy -caned everything in the book...I-thought
we'd have to get a mom -for -the night," said Need-
ham.
With only a conpleofeensth the team left to go,
Needham says he has a pretty good idea of how the
Irish look this year - mainly younger, and a bit fast-
er.
"I think were going to have some speed," said
Needham.
"Most of the guys we've signed are 15-17 years
old," he said, noting that 417 Dave Mancari is the
youngest player in an Irish uniform at 15 years old.
Mike Reid, Jay Jackson, and Aaron Moran are three
new 16 year olds.
Number 18, Travis Stinchcombe, has also.demon-
.suated a level of speed and agility that will impress
fans, predicted Needham.
The new players drawn from minor hockeyµwill
-have to get used to the rules and different -1vel:of
play; but Needham said "once they adjusGto'ihat, I
think we'll do fine."
Despite a.rigonous three -game weekend, Needham
said the players are holding. up well to the physical
demands of the. game. In fact, with the team win-
ning on Sunday, then coach said they were playing;
•avithfew signs of fatigue at all.
_thrall, Needham said the past week's losses are of
:tittle consequence. What counts is how the team
looks on opening night.
-"Pre-season is supposed to be an experiment.
-!khat's no excuse for losing...but things will change
'6y the ninth of October," he insisted.

Travis Stinchcombe blasts out from behind the Thamesford net to take a shot on goal. He
missed the shot, but coach Ken Needham predicts he will get many more chances later this
season.
