Hazardous material exchanges successful GRAND BEND - The opportuni- ties to remove materials that have traditionally ended up in landfill sites just keep on expanding and many municipalities within the $Iuewater Recycling Association are taking advantage of those op- portunities. Paint exchanges facilitated by Bh water.Recyciing and local ser- vice clubs,in.aeveral, communities in 0992-wtreilibeiket8 successaf- ter nearly 2,000 containers of oth- .erwise hazardous waste was col- • lected for redistribution. The program was introduced as an alternative to expensive house- hold hazardous waste days. The Association discovered that 71.2 percent of the material received during such days was paint. In response to last year's event, several more Bluewater municipal- ities have come forward. In total, 16 municipalities will host ex- changes during the fust two weeks of October. Participation in these paint exchanges is part of the cele- bration of Waste Reduction Week in Ontario from October 4 to 10. The Paint Exchanges have been expended to include car batteries and propane tanks this year. The used car batteries will be sent to market where they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling to produce new batteries. Refillable empty propane tanks will be sent to a Goderich remanu- facturer. They will be thoroughly cleaned, repainted, have a new valve installed and be pressure test- ed by certified technicians before being reedy for resale. Paint collected during the ex- changes will be distributed for a variety of uses. On October 1. Hensel) and Exet- er are hosting collections at their public works sheds. Usborne Township residents can bring their items -for recycling to the Exeter lo- cation. In Hensall, the collection runs from 9 a.m. to noon. In Exeter, col- lection will be held from 5-9 p.m. The Village of Zurich will be col- lecting the paint. batteries and pro- pane tanks from residents on Octo- ber 2, from 10-3 p.m. at the village works shed.
