Alice Dietrich was named Queen of the Fair and was crowned by last year's win- ner Debbie Taylor. The wheat flailing contest was won by Hay township councillor Tony Bed- ard who defeated Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw and area reeves, Gerry Prout of Usborne and Al- lan Wolper of Stephen. Very Wor. Bro. But through it all, Scott's primary focus, has been discovering new places and writing about them. The Ailsa Craig resident travelled to 97 countries to investigate poten- tial tourist hoc spots while he was the travel editor for the London Free Press for some 15 years. And then three years ago Scott decided to discover the hot spots in his own back yard. That meant tak- ing nine months to venture over more than 40,000 km of Ontario af- ter leaving the Free Press. These explorations lead to a wealth of information - enough to write four books. The most recent, Ontario Place Names, hit the bookstores last Tuesday. "I've always been curious how places get named," Scott said. So he began investigating. This lead to four months in gov- ernment offices and libraries hunt - David Scott displays the four books he has written about Ontario. His latest book, Ontario Place Names was just released last Tuesday. ing the origins of more than 1,000 communities with a population over 200. But space constraints forced Scott to trim the number of places listed in his 250 -page book to just under 1,000 communities. Luckily there was root enough to discuss places like Exeter, Hen- saU, Lucan, Grand Bend, just to name of few of the Huron commu- nities profiled. "It has historically important, off- beat and humorous stories of how communities got their names," he said. Some names, Scott said, came about by chance while others were clerical errors. He said the book also makes long trips more enjoyable because peo- ple can relate to the places they are travelling through. "The book comes into its own be- cause you have information on each community before you get to it," he said. Scou said there is something for everyone in the book. He's received a lot of exposure in the past three years from radio, tel- evision and newspapers that have commented on his books and life. But that doesn't mean he's getting rich. He spent $26,000 of his own money just researching one book, the Ontario Getaway Guidebook. And with so much money and time invested in this venture he has taken it upon himself to promote his books at more than 100 book- stores. "The key to working in the Cana- dian publishing industry is aggres- sive advertising, but even then it's a tough business because it's not a real money maker," he said. Right now Scott is disillusioned with the Canadian book publishing ria Always Affordable Always Dependable Has room to Grow With Your Needs IBM PS/1 E-46 —25 MHz 2 MB herd disk —up to 32 optional ---diskette drive: 3.5' 1.44 MB —3 At slots/3 drive bays —14' VGA colour monitor --IBM Selectrlc touch keyboard :tarp 486SX 25 Internal modem —114 mouse . —Software already Installed: MS DOS 8,0 Microsoft Windows 3.1 end Works for Windows plus Tutorials BONUS SOFTWARE World Atlas Mavis Beacon 2.0 Chesemoster 3000 --44X-1040 Colour Printer —2400 bps Internal modem —IBM mouse . —Software 55sko ady installed: Windows 3.1 and T a Windows plus TI9COMPLm MITCHELL I I COMPUTER SERVICE 63 Ontario Road, Mikhail, Ontario 348-9336 iRF TAM FR WE ARE PERTH AND HURON COUNTIES IBM PLATINUM DEALER .. . industry because its so tough to make a living. He says if his wife didn't work he wbuld have to get another job to supplement his income. But, Scott hopes this will be changing. Since this is his fourth book, he feels he has now made a name for himself in the market and more people will begin buying his books. "The ministry of tourism does produce some similar books but their not as accurate or as fun," he said. Scou also prides himself in the fact that the places he writes about, he has visited. That way he knows the information is accurate. "I know of writers in the United States who put together guides on Ontario without even leaving their home." And looking toward the future, Scott has a lot of ideas for other Ontario travel books such as a book about off beat names of Ontario towns and villages. But first, he's focussing on writ- ing a humorous novel.
