HIV/AIDS network
CLINTON - At the September
2nd meeting of the Huron County
H1V/AIDS Network, the decision
was made to focus on the hows
and whys of assuring confidentiali-
ty to Network clients and volun-
teers.
Living with HIV is a formidable
challenges - physically, emotional-
ly and spiritually. Unfortunately,
being HIV still carries a -stigma so
the struggle •is often made even
more frustrating and painful by
prejudice in the communities
which should be providing sup-
port. It is therefore very important
that persons with HIV infection re-
tain control over whether or how
they disclose their status to other
people.
Accordingly, the Network has
begun a process of Developing and
clarifying their policies and proce-
dures about confidentiality. Volun-
teers joining the Network are re-
quired to sign a confidentiality
agreement. Names of clients re-
ceiving services will be known
only to the volunteers who are di-
rectly involved with them. The
aim is to create an atmosphere of
safety and respect and to support
the clients right to privacy.
At the same time, the Network
hopes to provide education to the
community which will continue to
reduce the stigma experienced by
those living with HIV infection.
As part of this education, during
AIDS Awareness Week, October 4
- 10, the Network invites other
support agencies and the general
public to attend the October meet-
ing. It will take place on Tuesday,
October 5 at 7 p.m. in the old Hu-
ronview auditorium in Clinton.
Guest speaker, Alice McDonald,
is a counsellor with the AIDS
committee of London, and has
many years of experience in deal-
ing with people in a variety of situ-
ations that require absolute confi-
dentiality. She will be examining
the importance of confidentiality
in a number of different situations,
and help people sensitize them-
selves to the issue. She will also
answer and discuss with the audi-
ence any questions they might
have.
