Dated at Exeter, Ontario this 3rd day of September, 1993. NATIONAL TRUST COMPANY 1 Ontario Street P.O. Box 128 Stratford, Ontario N5A 6S9 By: Little & Grant Solicitors for the Estate That spare fridge may be an energy glutton TORONTO - if you're lila most Canadian consumers, you're prob- ably looking for ways to save on household expenses while doing your part to be environmentally re- sponsible. You can do both by re- placing a big household energy gluuon - the old "spare" refrigerator in the basement or summer cottage. When a new refrigerator is pur- chased for the home, the old appli- ance is often used for extra food storage, a basement apartment or the family cottage. It seems like a smart idea, until you find out older refrigerators are "energy gluttons," consuming as much as 'two and a half times the electricity of new ap- pliances. That can translate into a whopping $100-$125 a year in ex- tra hydro costs! "New refrigerators use almost 65 percent less electricity than -com- parable older models," says Michel Trudel, vice president, Marketing for Inglis Limited, Canada's largest supplier of major appliances. "That gives you an idea of the advances we've made in energy efficiency over the last few years." He.compares the energy savings between a new Inglis 20 -cubic foot Energysmart refrigerator and a 1972 model. The older model uses, on average, 1,986 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, com- pared with 714 kWh per year for a 1993 model. The increased efficiency produc- es big household energy savings. In Ontario, where electricity costs an average of nine cents per kilowatt hour, you would pay $179 each year to operate a 1972 Inglis refrig- erator (1,986 kWh x $.09/kWh). With a '1993 Inglis model, you would spend about $65 a year on electricity. Inn -10 years, the older re- frigerator. would use $1,790 worth of hydro versus $650 for the newer 'model. That's a $1,100 difference. If you have an older refrigerator, compare how much it's costing you to operate with the cost of running , a newer, more energy-efficient model. Just multiply the total num- ber of kilowatt hours (kWh) used by each refrigerator in a year by the hourly hydro cost The Enediuide label on new appliances indicates the kWh rating of modem refrigera- tors, but you may have to approxi- mate the energy consumption of your old unit Considering a typical new 2efrig- i is XiiAe> i 90 • to -REAL ESTATE AUCTION POR' J,.5-.. 9ASHWOOD-1561NAIN STREET To Be sold Without Reserve, Subject to Minimum Bid of $150,000 TUESDAY $EPJEMBER 2g. 11:00 A.M, Featuring' Totally renovated 12 unit apartment building on main intersection.
