Stray pets may get chance at 'foster' home program EXETER - Unclaimed stray animals found in Ex- eter may get a new lease on life under a new program proposed to town council Monday evening. Instead of having animals unclaimed after three days at the dog catchers put to sleep, the Ontario Humane Society has proposed a kind of foster home plan. Temporary homes would look after the animals until ' permanent homes would be found for them, deputy -clerk Laurie Dykstra told council, who added that the program was actually cheaper than hav- ing dogs or cats destroyed. Dykstra showed council figures that showed a medi- aa»sized stray dog picked Exeter, kept for the itquisite three days, and put down, would cost the taxpayer about $129. The foster program would cost about $84. "It would make sense to me to agree to that arrange- ment," said councilor Ben Hoogenboom, but said he wanted to know if all ani- mals would be accept- ed by this program. Dykstra said no, noting dogs in poor health, or showing signs of being badly mistreated would still be put down. "If it's an ideal kituation and they want to foster it out, then they will," said Dykstra. Council agreed the new program showed promise, but were also curious to :see : if the 'new owners of '-the Exeter -Animal Hospital were interested in dealing with Exeter's strays. At present, the dog catcher takes unclaimed animals to `the South Huron Veteri- nary Clinic after they have been boarded for three days. Lucan council encouraging local contacts with :irIsh namesake LUCAN - At"the regular meeting of September 7, village council members agreed to encourage local citizens and organizations to ini- tiate and maintain communications with residents of Lucan in Ireland. Lillian Harris, chairperson of the council in Lucan in Ireland made a recent visit here and impressed eve- ryone with her friendliness and sin- cerity in wanting the two villages to begin a twinning system. At that time she said she was keen on having school children in both communities exchange letters. When in Lucan she also received souvenirs and tokens of apprecia- tion from the Scouts and Girl Guides, Lions club and other groups. Harris said she would encourage contact by many groups and would be willing to provide names and ad- dresses to get the process going. Council here will be sending a letter to Harris thanking her for the plaque she brought and indicating council is in favour of ecouraging ties and fostering communications. Thanks were also sent to Rev. Bruce and Pat Pocock of Holy Trinity Anglican Church and to Bernard and Peggy Rooney of Bid- dulph Township who were instru- mental in arranging the visit of Lil- lian Hams, her husband Tom, and, daughter Aimee. Further on the same subject, Rev. Bruce Pocock told the T -A that he had a visit last weekend from an- other Lucan, Ireland councillor George Clark and his wifc Rose- tnary. Pocock said he will be exchang- ing addresses with Harris and Clark to further communications between the two municipalities. The local Anglican minister add- ed that he will be having contact with Rev. Bruce Pierce, rector of St. Andrews Church in Lucan, Ire- land and is making arrangements for Roman Catholic priests in the two namesake villages to establish communications. When here two weeks ago, Ai- mee imee Harris, daughter of Lillian Harris became good friends with Lori Wood and the two teenagers are expected to continue to be in touch with each other.
