It was the second time the two teams faced off and Exeter will look for different exhibition com- petition as they host the Wellesley Applejacks Friday in Hensall at 8 p.m. Last night the Hawks were in Wellesley. One decision they won't have to make is what will be their' number one' ine. That decision was made Saturday as veterans Shayne Rob- inson and brothers Todd and Sean McCann combined on six of the Hawks eight goals. Robinson led the Hawks.in scor- ing last year with 30_goals`and 43 assists and was cecond;m'the west division scoring race.11e.and the McCanns'. accounted for'79.of the Hawks 248 goals. It was the first game for Sean . McCann and Robinson and coach . George Pratt seemed pleased. "Let's just hope he (Robinson) stays healthy, he's been a big sus.- -prise. He's keen but they all are." The Hawks .have got five for- wards and 'five defensenten.zretum- ing so that leaves about nine spots open. .Some have :airrady . been signed but Pratt and assistant coach Dan Mudge stili have some deci- sions to make. "tan happy so far with things. We're looldng stronger than antici- pated," said Pratt. The strength on this year's team will be at centre with veterans Sean McCann, Ray Cousineau along with rookie . eve Farquhar of Ex- eter and Clinton's Nathan Bums. Saturday saw the Hawks jump Into a 2-0 first period lead which they extended to 5-0 at the end of 40 minutes. Goalie Kirk .Durand, the last puckstopper released from the Si Marys Junior''B' Lincolns did not .fallow a goal in .the 30 minutes he 'played. Look to him to be the num- ber one goalie. "He played well, he's improved a 'lot over the summer. He's challeng- ing the shooters," said Pratt. Chris Lyndon played the second 30 minutes and was very strong. The only puck that .got past "him came when Seaforth's Jason Hayter scored withejust 1:40 left in the game. It will be a?tough battle between Lyndon and Brandon Ropp for the other spot between the pipes. Robinson led the Hawks offense Continued on page 14 :Exeter Hawks' left winger Shayne Robinson (12) scored one of his three goals in Saturday night's game on this play as he helped the Hawks :to tn:itasy 8-1.win over Seaforth. f, CLEAN CUT SALE! First Mike Soldan contacted me about a uniform he found in a trunk at the family famt, then 1 was invited to a reun- ion of the Dashwood Stars. I must commend both Soldan and Stars' manager Sheldon Wein for making the effort to look into the past. Wein was very excited to tell me about the Stars who played in the 1940's and 1950's and how they had a very high winning percentage. First called the Stars, then Chicks and then Tigerettes, they won the provincial title in 1950. On a small table at the reunion, was a history of the Stars in- cluding a uniforum, crests and several pictures which former players easily spotted themselves in. While I was taking to Wein and some of the ladies I came up with a bit of an idea which I would like to pass on to oth- ers. It's kind of a borrowed idea so let's just say I've adapted it to fit the situation. A Sports Hall of Fame would be a terrific idea. Where to put it, who would take care of it once erected and getting items for it would be a big job. I'm not suggesting going out and construct a lavish building :o house the Hall of Fame but rather an area set aside in an ;xisting building which could facilitate it. The South Huron Recreation Centre; the'Youth CCntre or wen a school would be good spots to have it. A Sports Hall of Fame in this area would feature artifacts tom the past sporting accomplishments of Southem Huron county but there could also be regular inductees into the Hall. We in Exeter have a very good facilitytithe rec centre vhich has a lobby filled with plaques, pictures and trophies rom the various sports. What I am suggesting is bring these all together in a com- norrpiace and also for, whoever organizes it, to.go out and ookforanniforms,-pictures and other past spordngmomen- Notbtilmrearemany otherpeople, other than Soldan .atd'Wei .svho have boxes up in their attics filled with stuff vhichthey.wouldconsider I ading.to the Hall of Fame. A.couple of years .agothe.LucanIrish hosted a reunion jockey game which pitted two championship teams against .ach other. Ithought it was a great idea and I enjoyed looking .t old albums. Although I rnew very few of the people in those photos it vas stilInioaio look back on a hockey team and see how far thas progressed. ''The Exeter Hawks, Mohawksand the South Huron Panthers lllhave very `rich histories which date back many years. Those with old photos and uniforms I bet would want to see them preserved .and displayed. There used to be a big celebrity sports dinner in.Batster but ' it3ms ain¢c ne y the wayside. Costs and maybe a lack of interest have made this en event of the past. But the South -Huron Sports Hall of Fame would be a great way to bring this dinner back. Instead of charging a lot of money to come and hear profes- .sianal sports personalities talk of themselves, there could be a _Hall.of Fame dinner in which the inductees would be hon- oured. This idea would be met with mixed emotions because I un- derstand the various groups want to keep their own history in their perspective buildings but this would be a great way to share the past with everyone. From the sidelines:...ln last week's paper Andrew Sedlak's name was omitted from a soccer photo. He was the Most Sportsmanlike Player for the Squirt IV team. We apologize for the error.
