LUCAN - Give the two local Junior 'D' hockey clubs credit, they're
producing some pretty good talent.
Last Wednesday night in Lucan, seven players who at one time have
played for either the Exetet Hawks or the Lucan.irish,'.took part:ia a
Western Junior Hockey League preiseason garne. •
In front of a good sized crowd, the London Nationals whoareaffili-
ated with the Irish, ttdged•the St. Mary's Lincoln&who areaffiliated
with the Hawks, 5-4.
Renamed 'the Ontario Hockey Association Junior Development
League a year ago, both the Hawks and the Irish are making sure the
atamedives up to certain high standards.
For the Nationals, defenseman Chris Chater, goalie Eoin McInerney
:.and forwards Jason Reidhead and Jason Wilson were all wearing the
:green of the Irish last year.
Paul O'Shea who has been with the Irish the past two years has
signed with the Lincolns and goalie Kirk Durand was with the Hawks
last year..
Jason Heywood who has a couple of years with the .Lincs _to his
eve.

"attitflitieW yea nd I've Wit
year," said St. Marys co -coach Gerryte` iiialtfil
pecting big things out of him and tote a team leader."
Heywood who played centne.on Wednesday and who has even gone
as far as playing a few shifts on defense in the pre -season, scored one
goal and was a big part of another as he tied up Wilson behind the
Londonitet.
Durand-, a Zurich native, who will probably spend the year splitting
time between the Hawks and the Lincolns, looked sharp against the
Nationals and made a huge.save as soon as he got between -the pipes.
"He's only 16, he's going to be &good goalie. He came in cold to-
night,"=said •Seguin.
Another shot: Wilson has -signed -with the Nationals and the speedy
forward is looking towards playing with the team after a disappointing
half a season with theStrathroy Blades last year.
"This (London) is a good organization to play for and their competi-
tive," said Wilson who returned to the Irish last Christmas.
Although he played mostly left wing for the Irish, the llderton Mi-
nor Hockey Association product said he could be playing some centre
where he was on Wednesday.
"It's not 100 percent sure at centre. They're flipping me back and
forth."
Wilson said he's glad the Nationals have signed the four former Irish
and having McInerney, Chater and.Reidhead around will help to ease
the pressure.
"It makes you feel more comfortable and not out of place."
Mark•Phillips, who played midget in llderton last year looked good
for the Lincolns and he could make, that club.
Wednesday's game was scrappy and linesmen Jim Lewis and Steve
Gould were kept busy breaking,up the.altercations.
Shane Johnson was the big offensive weapon on the night as he had
four of the Nationals' five goals.

SEAFORTH - Just 48 hours after
opening their training camp, the
Exeter Hawks came up with their
first exhibition win of the 1993-94
OHA Junior Development League
season.
Friday night, the Hawks skated to
a disciplined 7-3 victory over the
host Seaforth Centenaires. Exeter
will try and make it two in a row
when they host the Cents in a re-
match in Hensall on Saturday night.
As expected this time of the year,
the 'Hawks have several big deci-
sions .to make on who to keep and
who to cut. Goaltending is perhaps
the position with the most talent.
Friday, Chris Lynden looked
sharp and so did big Brandon Ropp
although the latter did let in a
couple of long shots. Ropp who has
lost weight was with the Hawks
late last season while Lynden was
with Goderich midgets.
"We've got some.tough decisions
all 'over," said Exeter assistant
coach Dan Mudge who ran the
bench on Friday while coach/GM
observed from the stands.
Veteran Clint McCann is an over -
ager and as of Friday, had not been
to training.tamp.:Kirk Durand who
was a Hawk last year was recently
:released from the St. Marys Junior'
B' Lincolns. Add Exeter Minor
Hockey Association product Dar-
ren Kints into the picture and that's
a lot of netminders to choose from.
Although Friday's game was -pre-
season, the Hawks clearly dominat-
ed as they built a 3-1 first period
lead and it was 6-1 after 40 -min-
utes.
"There's a lot of young kidsand it
. means a:lot for them to play," said
Mudge. "The fust two practices
have been unbelievable there's been
a lot of enthusiasm."
Veterans Mark Lynn, Jason
-;McBride, Ray Cousinesu and Na-
sthan Blight all looked good. Other
Hawks returning are Shayne Robin-
son, Sean McCann, Dave Dalrym-
ple, Jamie Cornish and Kurt Ropp.
Todd McCann and Dalrymple are

: te_target of a lot of physical abuse
by the Geiutenaires. He backed
away from an altercation which
saw Seaforth's Ken Colquhawr
ejected from thegame.
"That's one thing we stressed,"
said Mudge. "They do it our way or
they don't do it."
From his vantage point, Pratt was

pleased at how good of shape the
Hawk hopefuls have come to camp.
"Conditioning is going to be one
of the top priorities," said Pratt.
Scoring for the Hawks were Na-
than Burns, Steve Farquhar, Jeff
Volland, Jeff Klages, McBride,
Todd McCann and Andrew -Scott.
Answering for the hosts were Kal-
en Carroll, Don Rivers and Chad
Ramer.
Ramer, a Zurich Minor Hockey
Association product started the sea-
son 'in Seaforth a year ago then
went on to play in Parkhill for the
North Middlesex -Stars. r
His goal, a blast from the left side
which ripped the twine behind
Ropp was set up by Steve Geiger
.also of Zurich. Geiger has been
working out with the Junior 'C'
Brussells Bulls, the Centenaires
and the Hawks.
Hawks happenings:...Referee
Jeff Smith whistled 34 minutes in
penalties to Seaforth and just 12 to
Exeter. Of the many new rules this
year, at the end of each period both
teams go to their respective bench-
es before being told they can leave
the ice...
Dying to put the puck past Seaforth goalie Dave Narhgang was Exeter Hawks' veteran for-
ward Todd McCann.
Irish are in search of goalies
LUCAN - At the start of last
year's training camp, the Lucan
Irish considered it to be a re-
building year.
The OHA Junior Development
League team still managed to fin-
ish fust in the west division's regu-
lar season standings with a 33-5-2
record.
This year will be even more of a
rebuilding year because as of early
this week, the'Irish has just six reg-
ulars returning.
Last week the Irish opened their
training camp and had 65 hopefuls
hit the ice.
Back are the league's leading
scorer Greg DePrest, captain Andy
Ross, forwards Derek Greenlee and
Scott Riddell along with defense -
man Keith Robson and Ed Vaulker-
koerle. Blueliner Craig Brown who
arrived on the team late last season
is also back.
"We just have to to with what
we've got," said Lucan coach Ken
Needham.
One of the big reasons the Irish
did so well last year was their goal-
tending. Puckstoppers Brent Lewis
with a 2.34 goals against average
and Eoin McInerney at 3.46 really
got the job done.
But McInerney is now with the
L6ndon Junior 'B' Nationals and
Lewis is an overager. The Irish arc
allowed two overagers and have
opted for Ross and VanKerkoerle.
"We don't have a goaltender.and
of this moment that's our biggest
concern. We've had seven or eight
come out but nobody's stood out,"
said Needham.
Lucan was hoping on speedy Ja-
soh Glasser to return but he's in Eu-
rope and Steve Moore who fin-
ished third in division scoring is
doubtful.
Look for DePrest to once again
provide the bulk of the offensive
punch.as he has the past couple of
years. The veteran centre had 41
goals and 64 assists in 39 games a
year ago.
Finding someone. to play along
side of him could be real tough.
"We may have to juggle some
guys around to see who works well
together," said Needham.
Ross and VanKerkoerle will be
counted on to be the team leaders
and VanKerkoerle who was third in
team scoring last year with 42
points will be the premier bluelin-
er.
The Irish have a busy exhibition
schedule which opens tonight in
Lucan against the Seaforth Cente-
naires and Sunday the Irish travel
to Seaforth.
