Allen is remem-
bered well by rela-
tives and friends in
this area. But he is
also remembered by
country music fans
everywhere for his
fiddling composi-
tions that were huge
hits of the 1950s. Perharls his best-
known composition is Maple Sug-
ar,
ugar, a recording of which was re-
quested by Queen Elizabeth for her
personal collection in 1953.
Allen first gained recognition for
his top-notch fiddling when he won
the Western Ontario Championship
at the annual fiddling contest in
Hensall. He won' it again the next
year and also won the Canadian
Old -Time Fiddler's Championships
in Shelburne.
He was a regular favourite on the
CKNX radio Barn Dance in Wing -
ham, and went on to star on CFRA
in Ottawa in 1954.
Over the years Allen played with
Johnny Cash and Wilf Carter. A
tribute to Allen was
included in the 1992
Usborne Sesquicen-
tennial Celebrations
in Kirkton.
Allen's sister-in-
law, lean Allen who
resides in Exeter,
says she can still
clearly recall his talented playing.
"Tho girls (Jean Allen's daugh-
ters) were all full of music and all
played piano. He'd come over eve-
ry day and play all morning with
them," said Jean.
Jean proudly shows photographs
of Ward Allen's fiddle which is on
display in the Nashville Country
Music Hall of Fame.
