Many, many lined up, however, to take their shot Grand Bend shows its appreciation GRAND BEND - It was an ex- traordinary day for an extraordi- nary group of people. On Saturday, the Grand Bend Council hosted an Appreciation Day for the many volunteers who donated their time and effort over the past year. ''We had a good cross-section of participation. It was a good start," said organizer councillor Bill Uni- ac.'He said there were several dif- ferent groups represented and he hopes this event will run again next year. . Volunteer Appreciation Day capped off an entire day in which the village recognized those who help the community be a better Tire to live. There was a barbeque, corn roast, entertainment, volleyball games and a dunk tank. "It was so fitting it (the com) was picked by volunteers in the morn- ing," said Uniac. Although all volunteers were rec- ognized, a special plaque was pre- sented to .Harold Klopp who was named the 'Volunteer of the Year.' Serving up the delicious corn at the Grand Bend Appreciation Day on Saturday was organizer councillor Bill Uniac. Like other Ontario municipali- ties, transfer payments from the province, called unconditional grants, are being cut beck. A letter from the Ministry of Municipal Af- fairs dated August 24 notified Exet- er there would be no August pay- ment. "They've missed two now," said clerk -treasurer Liz Bell, who ex- plained the first grant payment was hold back under the province's ex- penditure control plan, the second was for the Social Contract. Councillor Bob Spears asked how much the grant shortfall added up to. Bell said she could only guess, butsaid it was likely about $ 100.000". Spears asked if the town wuukl be needing to borrow funds to pay its bills in the interim, but Bell said finances are still being supported by budgeted taxes.
