New throat protection are

players -across the 'province step
on' the ice -this month, -many of
them will have anew -look.
Although it won't be drastically
noticeable, the new Canadian
Amateur Hockey . Association's
mandatory throat protector, is .de-
signed to give more protection :to
a player's neck.
Hockey parents and officials in
this area should be advised that
this is not mandatory for OMHA
teams now, but it will, be in the
future.
As a result of several meetings
the past few months, the OMHA
has.indicated it will not be part of
the CAHA.
That means that the new neck
protectors wont have to be used
by players unless they are in a
CAHA sanctioned tournament.
"I have not received any corre-
spondence in regards to neck
guards," said Exeter Minor Hock-
ey Association president Mike
AnstetL
"I'm not going to worry about it
until we get a directive."
Dennis Kints who is the EMHA
representative for the Shamrock
League says that the OMHA is no
ll Iger part of the CAHA and to
his knowledge the new protectors
are not mandatory
He has confirmed that with
OMHA. rep Dick Bennett.
However,. the Shamrock League
has a meeting tonight and that -is
one of the things they will dis-
cuss.

one of the new neck protectors
will receive a minor penalty and
may not -return to the ice unless
they have one.
Bureau de Normalisation du
Quebec (BNQ) established the
national standard after two Que-
bec teenagers ,died following
skate cuts to their necks in the
early 1980's.
There have been other serious
injuries including that to Buffalo
Sabres' goalie Clint Malarchuk
who received a cut on his jugular
vein four years ago.
Little difference: Ron Bogart
of -RSD Sports Den in Exeter says
he hasn't fully examined one of
the new protectors but says he
cant see any difference between
the old -Ones and the new ones.
"As far as I can tell they look
the same but they have the stamp
on them," said Bogart.
Although he and other sporting

goods stores knew about the new
equipment, they had little warn-
ing.
"Nobody's told us anything, we
just heard about it."
Dave Partridge who works at
MacLean's Source Sports also
says they've received very little
information about the new piece
of equipment.
"I know the whole thing has
been handled poorly. We've only
been notified by the suppliers," he
said of no information which has
come from hockey organizations.
About ten years ago, the CAHA
made it mandatory for all minor
hockey players to wear a throat
protector 'or neck guard as they
are commonly known.
The mandatory protector ap-
plies only to those players -under
the jurisdiction of the CAHA
while junior, senior and recrea-
tional players will not be forced
to wear them. However, all wom-
en under the CAHA including
recreational -players, will have to
have them.
Leo Krahn of Exeter had what
could have been a severe neck in-
jury when he was playing as a
teenager back in Alberta about 17
years.ago.
"I was coming down the
wing...I was picking up -the loose
puck and the wingers' skate cut
me," said Krahn.
Although it missed his jugular
vein and required only 11 stitches
it could have been a lot worse and
Krahn realizes he was lucky not
to receive a more serious injury.
"It wasn't a jugular cut but it
was closed to being severed," he
recalls.
He was not wearing a neck
guard as they were simply not
part of any mandatory equipment
at the time. Other then a few
games of pickup, Krahn never
played hockey again.
Winner et -the Bayview Men's invitational Tournament -fast
Wednesday was Mike Belgrave (right)• who shot a 67 to get
his name on the trophy and a new set of clubs. Low net scor-
er for the day was Jim Masse (left), tournament host.
