Exeter Inn picked as one of
bestrestaurants in Canada
By Catherine O'Brien
T -A staff
EXETER - Michel Bonrot, chef
and owner of Frenchman's Inn, re-
ceived a pleasant surprise in the
mail last winter. It was a brief letter
saying the Inn would appear in a re-
cently published restaurant guide.
"It's not something you know
about," he said of being reviewed
in the guide. "You can't do any-
thing to get into the book and you
can't do anything to be taken out."
The 405 -page book. Where To
Eat In Canada 1993, reviews well
over 500 restaurants across the
country ranging from the most ex-
pensive to the affordable.
Reviews are done without the
knowledge of the restaurant owner
and there is no advertising or spon-
sorship to influence opinion.
This is the first time the Inn has
appeared in the 23 -year old guide
and Bonnot not only sees it as a
benefit for his restaurant, but the
Exeter region as well.
"The book is sold nation wide, so
it should bring a lot more people
through Exeter and that will be
good for the local economy."
Menu items were praised in the
review, especially breads and des-
serts.
This pleased Bonnot since these
are two areas he takes pride in and
sees as equally important elements
of the meal.
"Many chefs hate doing pastries,"
he said.
But as a trained pastry chef, pre-
paring interesting desserts is not a
problem.
Bonnot sees the review as a
pleasant reward after four busy
years working to establish a strong
client base since taking over owner-
ship of the restaurant in 1989.
Prior io moving to Exeter, Bon -
not received training in his native
France before moving to Montreal
where he met his wife Lesley.
"My wife had spent time in this
area during the summer as a child."
Her fond memories of the region
were a key factor in looking to Ex-
eter when they decided to move to
Ontario.
Now, Bonnot is concentrating on
continuing to provide a fine dining
experience at a modest price.
The comfortable size of the 50 -
seat Inn, makes it easy for Bonnot
to focus on meal preparation, he
said.
"You can cook properly in a
place this size without giving up
quality."
Triplets heading off to
school at Stephen Central
CREDITON - Starting kinder-
garten can be a scary experience for
some children and parents, as the
kids venture out into the unknown
all alone for the fust time.
But parents like Larry and Bren-
da Ryan don't have anything to
worry about. They know there's
power in numbers.
The couple learned that almost
five years ago when they became
the parents of triplets.
So when their children; Kaitlin,
Kyle and Josh headed off to Ste-
phen Central for kindergarten today
mom and dad knew their children
wouldn't be lonely.
"They enjoy each others compa-
ny," said Brenda. And they are very
protective of each other when away
from home."
The triplets are looking forward
to scatting school, but at first they
were concerned they might not be
in the same class.
"I know there are two kindergart-
en classes, but I wanted them to be
together in the beginning," Brenda
said.
When the children are in higher
grades she would like to see them
split up so they can gain their own
sense of independence.
But not just yet.
Classmates may not realize they
are among triplets because the
threesome don't look the same.
"Now that they aren't babies they
0
are all different sizes, so many peo-
ple don't think they are the same
age."
They also have their own distinct
personalities and characteristics,
she said.
Although triplets may seem like a
novelty to many people, the Ryan's
view their family just like any other
with three children.
The only difference is their kids
are all the same age.
