CAPTURE OF A MURDERER NAMED BOND.
One of the inspectors of the 'Mount-
ed police, writing from Fort MacLeod,
on the 28th of October last, gives the
following information of the capture of
a cc lored man named Bond, who, it is
thought, killed a man near Chatham,
nine et ten years since:
" I had command of ithe expedition
that did the first actual which with the
force was sent hereto perform, viz, the
capture of a train of whiskey, together
with a well-known character by the
name of &aid (a negro) who shot sev-
eral Indians here, and ims done all sorts
of things in other places. Do you
know of a murder having
been committed in Chatham, Ontario
sometime between 1805 and 1868.
Some pf our men from near there say
they think the name of the murderer
was Bond, and that he was a black Mail.
It would be a great thing if it could be
established that this is the man., He says
himself that he came from Chatham,
or near there. At any rate, I wastold
to capture hint and I did, awl brought
him with his friends into camp. 1
wish you could have seen the triumph-
al emry. As I mune along the prairie,
large numbers of Indians had been at.
tracte,1 from the lodges by the escort
with the train and followed us into
camp. When they found wo were
friendly, and had arrested the men for
a eir good, they were greatly pleased
atany having caught the Digger, as be
had been in the habit .of knockiue them
about when he got the chance, besides
having killed one of their greatest
chiefs aboet a year ego. I had under
my command on the expedition after
these people ten men mounted, but
of you.' 4 Nonsense, my dear, sotti_tilie,ir horses were dreadfully knocked
know sometimes I go away t
and leave ' p,and when I galloped up to attack
the traders, the horses of four ot my
men ga,ve out, consequently I made my
capture with six men. You will ex-
-cuse me if I am, a little egotistical in
this molter, fi r when yon consider that
Iliad to ride. fifty miles from camp sir
to the very heart of the Indian coun-
try, none of whom any of the force
hal yet seen, and that these whi:luy
men were armed with sixteen -shooters,
Henry rifles and revolvers. I am inclin-
ed to be a little proud of the affair.
Col. AlcLeed congratulated me heartily
on tile euccess of the enedid nu Ib
WiLs the first thing thal had been done
in the counry,,and has been done in
the. country, but they were fooled this
time. Anyway, I left our camp at six
o'clock. in the evening, and met these
chaps just escaping from their fort near
the ' Po eupine Hills, a spnr of the
Rocky Mountain, at 7 o'clock the next
morning, having ridden all night with-
out eating or sleepiug. I started with
. .
instructions to capture the nigger at his
fort, but I found they were just leav-
ing. Had I been one hour later I
-should have missed them. The
whiskey train I captured myself; the
Colonel not being' aware that I should
meet any on the road, or in reality I
killed two birds with one stone. The
alcohol, confiscated buffalo robes, and
fines, amounted to some gi31,500. The
nigger we held:dill for the crimes Men-
