Exeter Rookies Is host
OBA tourney this weekend
Baseba77
EXETER - Onceagain Exeter will be hosting a pro-
vincial baseball championship tournament as Rookie
ball comes to town on the Labour Day weekend.
li is just the second year that Rookie ball has had an
Ontario Baseball Association final as it is a new game
which ingrowing in popularity.
The rules of baseball.are followed and the only dif-
ference in the game (which is for eight and nine year-
olds) is that one of the coaches puts balls into a pitch-
ing machine which ejects balls at the bauer.
"The kids really love it, they get consistent pitches
they can hit," said Exeter Becker Faun Equipment
Off to Hanover
coach Dan Meidinger.
He is the organizer for the seven -team tournament
which begins on Saturday at the South Huron Recrea-
tion Centre and concludes the following day.
With the pitching machine and more hitting, comes a
lot more fielding which keeps everyone very busy.
There arc 11 fielders including two 'pitchers' who
stand beside the pitching machine.
Tournament action begins on Saturday at 9 a.m.
when Mitchell takes on Leamington. That's followed
'iby Pt. Colborne against Georgetown at 10 a.m.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10:45 a.m.
=and will feature piper Ian McCrae, Mayor Bruce Shaw
.. and Julie Godbolt who will sing O'Canada.

eter takes on Blenheim and the winner of that will face

HANOVER - The Exeter River-
view Estates Midgets are coming
off a very successful qualifying
tournament in which they won 4 -
of -5 games.
This weekend in Hanover, at the
Ontario Baseball Association 'D'
tournament, they will once again
look to pitching as their strength.
Beginning Saturday morning on
the diamond in .nearby Walkerton,
Exeter will havea lot of pitchers,
including a pair of •lefthanders to
get the job done.
Lots of pitchers

Hanover on Labour Day, I like our
chances," said Exeter coach Gary
`. ''HANG ON TO YdUR' 1ATS''
Yep, hang onto your hats folks because the signing of ALEXAN-
DER DAIGLE is going to cause trouble for other General Manag-
ers of drafts.... "Big Time!"
In case you don't know the details listen to this. Alexander will re-
ceive in base salary in his first year 1.225 million, next year. 1.425
million, 2.35 million, 2.6 million. and 2.65 million. But you ain't
heard nothing yet because in each of his first four years there's a
signing bonus of, first year - $75.000, second year - $250,000, then
$500,000 for Ike next .two years. So now things are different, yeh
really hang on because the next year he gets 1.975 million, then
1.675 million and in 1995-1996 2.85 million. It's getting better folks
because in the next year 1996-97 it's 3.1 million. Now you must re-
member this is for a guy who hasn't scored a goal or skated a shift in
the big time. Sure you're gonna say what about ERIC LINDROS?
Wait a minute, ERIC skated and played a regular shift in the Cana-
da Cup and was in the top 3 forwards on the team. Not only that, he
broke ULFIE SAMUELSON'S, shoulder so he's alright in my
book. There's no comparison. One guy, ERIC is 6'6" 240 lbs., and
the other guy weighs 170 lbs. Don't get me wrong, more power to
the kid. If he can get it, great, but what happens now to HART-
FORD WHALERS. What does their G.M. BRIAN BURKE say to
CHRIS PRONGER (who actually was No. 1 in the central scout-
ing). PRONGER'S agent will say "now wait a minute" if Central
scouting picks us No. I and DAIGLE was picked No. 2 and he gets
12.5 million and your offering us this?"
What can BURKE say? Same as PHIL
ESPOSITO. What does he say to
CHRIS GRATTON (a real beauty,
tough, a hitter who can put the puck in)
who was selected No. 3?
I know for a fact that some G.M.'s
are sick over the signing, but as I said,
more power to the kid if he c an get and
get it when he can.
If I was GILLES LUPIEN (his
agent), 1 would tell ALEXANDER to
watch is mouth though. When you make a statement like "I'm glad I
was No. 1 and whq remembers who was No. 2 or 3"? 1 don't thunk I
would say that about number 2 or 3, especially when the number 2
pick is 6'6" and the number 3 pick, GRATTON is 6'3" 220 lbs. and
KILLS in the corner.
ANOTHER BAD DECISION IN OTTAWA
One more comment 'on the Ottawa Senators. For the life of rite
why would they let MIKE PELUSO go? Here's a guy who not only
scored 15 goals (not bad for a team like Ottawa) but he had 318 min-
utes in penalties including all the fighting and protecting -of- the
smaller players. Doesn't It make sense that you keep a guy who can
put the puck in and be an enforcer who could protect DAIGLE
whose gonna need a lot of protecting? Doesn't make sense to me.

nals a year ago.

Seniors
Express miss by one run
TILLSONBURG - The Exeter
Express missed going to this year's
Ontario Baseball Association Sen-
ior 'D' championship tournament
by a single run.
Sunday afternoon in Tillsonburg,
the host Red Sox squeaked out a
slim 4-3 win to send them to the
tournament which this year, is be-
ing held in Kendal.
Tillsonburg one the opening
game of the bast -of -three playoff
series, a convincing 10-6 victory
but Saturday saw Exeter pitcher
Scot Russell toss a four -hitter in an
8-0 shutout win at the Alvin Wil -
len -Field in Exeter.
That forced Sunday's game.
which saw the visiting Express
hold a slim 3-2 lead until the sev-
enth when the Red Sox tied it up
before winning it in the bottom of
the ninth.
Exeter jumped into a 2-0 lead in
the top of the third frame when
. catcher Bill Glover reached base on
,;an error, moved on a Fred Gregus
ase hit and then back-to-back sin-
gles by Rob Dickey and Rick Boon
put the visitors ahead.

Zurich Lumber Queens
Mystery of uniform is
solved by former player
ZURICH - It didn't take long to
solve a mystery.
In last week's issue of the Times -
Advocate, Exeter Mike Soldan toad
found a women's ball uniform
which he believed to be from the
1950's.
After printing Soldan's phone
number in the paper, Zurich's Joan
McKinnon of Zurich was quick to
give him a call and tell Soldan that
she was a member of the Zurich
Lumber Queen's from 1950 to
1952.
According to McKinnon it was a
,women's softball team which
played against such teams as Hen -
;d llderion, She still has a few

though they had fun, didn't win too
many games.
"I don't think it (Lumber Queens)
lasted .too long because we didn't
win too many games," said McKin-
non.
Coached by Clare Bedard and
then Herb Turkheim, McKinnon
easily remembers other team mem-
bers: Barb Gascho, Gladys Bedard,
Betty O'Brien, Marlene Wagner,
Joyce Witmer, Shirley Fairbairn,
Betty Parke, Marie Willard, Carol
Thiel, Joan McKinley, Marg
Schilbc, Marg Hess, Dolly Hilde-
brand and Ruthanne Soldan.
The last name on that list is a rel-
ative of Hike's and no doubt that's
who the woolen uniform belonged
to.
Found in a trunk on Mike Sol-
dan's farm, the uniform the Lumber
Queens wore was grey with red
trim and the socks were similar to
heavy hockey socks.
"I don't remember it being that
terrible," said McKinnon of the
uniform.
Many of the ladies still live
around Zurich and no doubt they
have many fond memories of their
days on the ball diamond.

Tillsonburg tied it up before Exet-
er's Dickey and Boon combined
again in the fifth to bring Glover
home.
Dave Atthill started on the
mound for the Express but gave
way to Boon in the third who went
the rest of the way. The two com-
bined to allow trine hits including
six doubles.
Express 8. Red Sox 0
In perhaps their best game of the
season, Exeter held a 1-0 lead until
the sixth inning when they scored
six big runs to put the game out of
reach.
On the mound, Russell did not al-
low a hit until the fourth inning and
on the day, went nine full innings,
allowing four hits and six walks.
Exeter juggled their lineup some-
what as they put Kevin Hem at
third base and moved Dickey to
left field.
Gregus who made a great defen-
sive play to double off a runner in
the eighth inning had a double and
a single while Scot Russell had a
pair of base hits.
The team would like to thank
coaches Walt Parkinson and Doug
Fairbairn for their efforts over the
season.
