I
As I was worsting in my
vegetable garden the other
day, and I must admit, day-
dreaming just a little bit
about a trip we had taken a
while ago, I smiled when I
remembered a certain din-
ner onder which we placed
in a foreign country. You
would imagine going into a
restaurant with a familiar name, all -be -it several thousand miles
away from home, you would recognize the items on the menu.
Pizza Hut, and a five item pizza - what could be easier? But wait
what is that strange topping called capsicum? When we asked,
I'm afraid the waitress was rather taken aback, and it took her a
few seconds to recover enough to tell us about a round, green or
red vegetable that grew on a short bush, and was chopped up to
put on the pizza. Deciding even on that slim description to try it,
we were pleasantly surprised to see that it was simply the stan-
dard good old green pepper.
Capsicum is a member of the nightshade family and is native
to North and South America. When the Spanish explorers dis-
covered the West Indies in the late 1400's, the plants were called
peppers because that is what they had originally been searching
for, the Spice Islands and the eastern pepper plants. I'm sure Co-
lumbus was hoping that since he had not discovered the right
place, he had at least discovered the right plant, or one which
was related to the one he was searching for. However, he was
wrong.
The fruits of these plants are called peppers in North America
and capsicum in many other parts of the world. They range in
taste from very mild to extremely hot. The mildest peppers, bell
peppers, are found in a variety of colours including green, red,
yellow and purple. The green bell pepper which is so common is
just an immature pepper of another colour.
One bell pepper has more vitamin C than an 8 ounce glass of
orange juice, and red peppers are loaded with Vitamin A. They
are a very healthful food.
