CREDITON - The St. Pauls
Chi e[s rRItNt4geord of going all 1
seasoslAras they clinched
the season end tournament in Cre-
diton Saturday.
The double elimination four -team
South Perth Ladies Fastball tourna-
ment saw the Chiefs streak through
the day unscathed, even though the
final game against the Exeter Greys
made for one of the most dramatic
finishes possible in fastball.
Crediton and Sebringville were
eliminated earlier in the day; Credi-
ton falling to St. Pauls 5-2, and
then to Exeter 6-1.
The Greys found themselves in
the difficult position of having to
defeat the Chiefs twice in order to
claim the league championship. It
wasn't to be.
The Greys held an early 2-1 lead
in the final game, but watched the
Chiefs go ahead 5.2 by the bottom
of the sixth inning.
Down to her last pitch on Exeter's
last out at the top of the seventh,
Gayle Beuermann found a hole
4ihrough which to get the ball to the
'back fence. The two -RBI home
Arun saw Exeter tied 5-5, renewing
Tropes to either clinch it then, or go
pato extra innings.
The rally was cut short, however,
giving 'the .Chiefs their chance to
finish off the Greys.
St. Pauls' Terri Griffith also
found:. a hole in Exeter's .defense,
sending the ball deep.into.the then -
dark outfield. Running it out, she
edged out the throw with a dramat-
ic .slide across home plate, giving
`_her team the one -run advantage
they needed. Griffith was hoisted
to her teammates shoulders as they
celebrated their season -end win.
"It was a good championship
game," acknowledged Greys' coach
Georgina Reynolds, who said she
was proud of the way the . team
fought back from a "shabby" start
earlier in the day.
Mystery uniform found
in trunk at Soldan farm
*Dee Soldan models the uniform which might have been
worn by one her relatives many years ago.
EXETER - Mike Soldan is trying to solve a mystery.
The Exeter resident has conic across a ladies' ball uniform which
dates back at least prior to 1957.
Recently, Soldan came across the woolen uniform which was worn
by a team called the Zurich Lumber Queens and sponsored by Kalb-
fleisch Mills.
There was a Zurich Lumber Kings hardball team which played in
rite 1960's and 70's but Soldan says no,one scents to recall the Lumber
Queens.
Soldan first notified the Times -Advocate on Thursday about his
find which he came across in an old trunk on the family farm on Hu-
ron Road 31 near Zurich.
"That trunk has been ;dere .since Is 15 and I never looked
through it," said Soldan. •
The uniform whicli is in excellent condition is entirely made out o
wool - socks, which arc identical to hockey socks, a cap, buuon u
jersey and pants no doubt were very uncomfortable to wear.
The cap is red, the socks are red and white while the uniform itse
is grey with red trim.
Solcfan said the trunk, which had a newspaper in the -bottom datin
to 1957, was owned by his aunt Elsie Case of Hensall who along wi
her husband Garnet owned an operated a local bakery.
"It's a complete mystery. 1 think it would be fun to see who fru
Zurich played on that team."
If anyone has information about the team, call Mike Soldan at 235
2045.
Becky Morgan, above, of the

team serves up her best
pitches for the team's final
game against Exeter Satur-
day afternoon.
Left, Lisa Henderson keeps
her eye on the ball for this
catch in the Exeter Greys
game against Crediton Satur-
day afternoon.
"We did well," said Reynolds.
"My pitchers did well today, and
the bats got better as the day went
on."
However, even if Exeter had sur-
vived that last game against St.
Pauls, they would fiave had .to go
back out onto the field and face the
Chiefs again to take the champion-
ship. Even that seemed too much
to expect against a team that has
reigned at the top of the league all
season long.
