By Erin Lobb T -A staff DASHWOOD - It's hard to be- lieve the only thing between Mike Stevens and stardom was half an inch of foam and rubber. Stevens has recently been chosen for the role of Tommy Tricker in a childrens movie production entitled the Return of Tommy Tricker. However, getting the role was no easy task. Stevens first heard of the audi- tions on CKCO-TV and asked his mother, Debbie, if he could go. "I thought it would be ridiculous," said Stevens mom, "but he bugged me so much I finally took him? Upon Stevens arrival at the Kitch- ener audition he was checked to see if he could meet the height require- ment, Stevens got in line but was disappointed to learn that he was too tall. Said his mom, "I told him 'there was he happy' I had told him all along it was silly, not only had they auditioned 200 children that day but thousands more in New Zealand, -.and the U.S." However Stevens looked down and noticed his shoes, the soles must have been at least a half an inch thick, he took them off and went back in. This time he was just tall enough. After a series of auditions that day Stevens was notified last Wednes- day that he was one of five finalists, and that they would be calling again to let them know. The call Thurs- day clinched it. When a representa- tive of the Lafayette film company called again to ask that Stevens mom proceed with getting a medical and a passport they told her that her son had been chosen to play the main role of Tommy Tricker. The Stevens had never even heard of Tommy Tricker, but many of the neighbourhood children had seen it on First Choice before and seemed very familiar with it. "We were so surprised," said Debbie Stevens, "immediately I checked into the company's refer- ences, and found out that not only are they very reputable, but the Tommy Tricker series won an cLeana ,/ / 1 / / I / / / / / i / i / i i i / i • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ♦ ori• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •••••••••• • • • • • • • • • •••••••••• UNBELIEVEABLE MARKDOWNS CHECK OUT THE GREAT SELECTION ••••••• •••••••••• Patio Ensembles 0 Lawn Chairs el Umbrellas g Patio Tables ei Chairs & Lounge Cushions Barbecues O Coolers & Jugs O Picnic Supplies 0 Lawn Mowers E1 Wheelbarrows O Household Fans O Landscape Materials ei Top Soil el Manure 6 Planters O Bark Nuggets and Mulch g Fertilizers 0 Peat Moss O Bicycles MOWERS BICYCLES and Choose t GARDENING EQUIPMENT from the area's best selection SAVE BIG PATIO SETS MacLeans is your Hockey Headquarters • Best Selection • Competitive Prices • Expert Advice • Excellent Service • Best Brands r Why we more ala more people choosing MacLean Source for Sports es he hockey herfouar lets? Despite his lack of experience Ste- vens felt he's always had a knack for it, and if'this works out he might like to pursue acting as a career. On September 15 Stevens will be heading out to shoot in locations such as Sorrel Island, Montreal, along the St. Lawrence river, and Cooke Island in New Zealand. "It's a dream come true, they're sending a script by courier, and I can hardly wait to get started," said Stevens„ The Return of Tommy Tricker is the 15th part of the Tommy Tricker series. Stevens character is a broth- er to five bothers is and sisters, his father is an alcoholic, so Tommy supports the family through his tricks. "It's a good childrens show. There are no guns, violence, or swearing that's what impressed me most," said Debbie. Stevens will be gone for seven weeks, but will have a chaperone with him. Though his mom would love to travel with him she will be busy taking care of her othertwo children. Says Debbie, "It's all so new, exciting and unfamiliar that right now were just getting used to the idea."
