That is testimony to the fact this a game she truly enjoys, not because she hasn't played in a while, in fact she just got back from the national championships. Representing Ontario at the un- der -18 National Field Hockey Tournament in Calgary, Alberta on July 24-25, Baynham got a taste of field hockey with Canada's six best junior teams. The British Columbia team came away as the tournament winners, but only after tying Ontario in the final game, and winning on overall points. Had second -place Ontario won that game, or even 'if they hadn't lost their lead to Manitoba on a penalty corner with 10 sec - 'mit to go...well, there's always .room for 'what ifs' especially with McFaIIs' head to provincials the low scores associated with field hockey. Mind you, Baynham's Ontario team managed to set a new high - score record for national fic!d hockey. "Our one game against New Brunswick went 12-0.. We set a new iecord for a national tourna- ment," laughs Baynham, but adds the rest of the games didn't go past the usual two goals or so. Is playing against Canada's best any different than blasting the ball around at South Huron District High School's field? Baynham speaks of slightly different rules, no coaching from the bench, more set plays for certain situations, and as- troturf. Playing at McMahon Stadium, the home of the Calgary Stamped- ers gave Baynham a taste of play- ing on an artificial surface. It's softer, but the ball travels quicker, and in a straighter line. "It's a lot easier to read where the ball's going," said Baynham. The large stadium doesn't mean EXETER - 'Peter and Gloria McFalls won •the District 4 Mixed Pairs. Are you playing lacrosse, or....?" jokes Baynham. The 16 year-old: started practis- ing with the Ontario team last No- vember, spending weekends in To- ronto to prepare for the nationals. "The hardest thing is playing with people I've never played with be- fore," said Baynham, adding she had to adjust for the different styles of coaching her teammates were used to, coming from all over the province. She says she is interested in re- turning to the provincial team next year, and is being encouraged to try indoor field hockey over the winter. But her next goal is to get back with South Huron's team this fall. Baynham credits coach Jim Workman with keeping South Hu- ron's team consistently good over the years, pointing out that even though they weren't expected to do well in 1992, they still came away with the OFSAA title for the first time since 1989. South Huron will be hosting OF - SAA this year, bringing more local attention to a sport that gets most of its interest from the Metropolitan Toronto area. After high school, Baynham said she is definitely hoping to keep her interest in the sport going. Does that include playing at the national level? 'lie Olympics? "I dont know," said Baynham. "That would be nice, but I haven't looked at that yet." •2 :r>ii:`•,'•; ri <`:`'< :> =:';;lis>::L; c;,r`iars: iriri ?stitj iilar': 7I iylXn x'7n rr: • 1iU MAY NEVER BE ABLE TO BUX.A '93 DODGE WIRIT/PLYMOUTH ACCLAIM AT A PRI THIS LOW AGAIN. g No charge air conditioning [r Standard driver's side air bag F Automatic transmission yr Available six passenger seating L Front wheel drive Id Tilt/Cruise (' AM/FM stereo cassette (d Power steering L Power disc brakes L ' No charge Gold & Silver Special Editior :kage includes: aluminum rally wheels, luggage rack, front fascia and mouldings, stripes, decals, and more.
