Canadian premiere keeps
audience laughing at Playhouse
By Fed Groves
T -A staff
GRAND BEND - All Canadian
theatre eyes were fully focused on
the Huron County Playhouse last
Week as it preseqted the Canadian
premier of Out of Order.
A British comedy written by Ray
Cooney and directed by the Play-
house's own Max Reimer is a
laugh -til -you -can't -stop play which
runs until Saturday.
Despite being very busy, what
with three doors and a window al-
ways being used and people being
shuttled in and out, Out of Order is
about a Junior Minister in the Brit-
ish government who is having, or
rather trying to have, an affair with
a secretary.
But the affair never happens at
the posh Westminster Hotel be-
cause a body is found hanging on
the window sill.
Chris Britton as politician Rich-
ard Willey, M.P. is very quick to
make up new identities for every-
one including the body. The secre-
tary, Gail Webster as Jane Worth-
ington has to help hide the body
and at:the, samg time hide from her
husband.
Like most comedies, there has to
be a funny man and a straight man.
While tritton plays the straight
man, it's Paul Brown as George
Pigden who brings this show to
life.
Pigden is Willey's personal per-
liamentary secretary and the clutp
who has to help his boss get out•of
a sticky situation.
Every play has a main character
and Pigden, with his hilarious ges-
tures and always present fear of
what is going to happen next, is the
crowd's favourite.
A well written play, it is Pigden
who discovers that the body found
earlier, is not really dead but has
been knocked out by a window
which, throughout the play, seems
to have a mind of its own.
It is amazing how a simple thing
like a window can be such a main
factor in a play.
While Britton and Brown are ac-
credited for making Out of Order a
success, Colin Miller as the Waiter,
Bryan Foster as the Manager and
George Pothitos as the Body, are
part of a strong supporting cast.
While some plays involve several
scenes, many sets and a confusing
plot, this one is just plan good en-
tertainment.
The Playhouse's set designer
Robert Ivey once again has come
up with a set which uses every inch
of the stage and with a play which
keeps moving, that is very impor-
tant.
Out of Order was first produced
under the title Whose Life is it Any-
way in England and was directed
and starred Cooney in May 1990. It
came to the United States in August
1991 and won the Olivier Award
for Comedy of the Year in 1991.
With Oait of Order the Huron
Country Playhouse has introduced
all of Canada to what no doubt will
be a play with a long and memora-
ble future.
Next on the boards:...The sum-
mer season continues at the Huron
Country Playhouse Neil Simon's
Barefoot in the Park which begins
August 3 and runs until August 14.
Directed by Jeannette Lambermont,
this comedy is about newlyweds
and their new apartment...
Exeter Scouts return from
Alberta national Jamboree
EXETER - Five Exeter Scouts and three Ventur-
ers have returned from a highlight of their summer.
The troupe, which included three leaders, headed
to Kanaskas Country, west of Calgary in Alberta for
a 10 -day Jamboree - the Eighth Canadian Jamboree.
In all, the event brought together about 15,000
people involved in Scouting across the country for a
variety of outdoor activities and fellowship.
When asked what her favourite activity was,
Scout Erin Kraftcheck quickly replied "Rappelling
and rock clmbing...it was awesome," but added that
a trip to the Calgary Stampede and an overnight
hike into the mountains were also highlights of her
trip.
"And we met people from all across Canada. That
was really cool," she said.
Scout leader Susan Kraftcheck, Erin's mother, said
that one challenge for the Exeter group was the thin
air encountered in the mountain hikes.
"Even though we prepared for [the hiking) you
can't get ready for the altitude," she said.
Other activities included shooting, archery, crafts
such as making moccasins, and playing a game of
"tag" on a large scale with 14 -seat freighter canoes
on Barrier Lake.
Brendan Kraftcheck said he particularly enjoyed
a dip in the hot springs in "a 33 degree celsius pool,
while the rest were all off freezing."
Bryan Negrijn agreed, adding that it was surpris-
ingly hard to get out of the pool back into the cold
mountain air.
'Td say the only thing I didn't enjoy was the gla-
cier water shower," said Erin Kraftcheck - an expe-
rience which many of the male Scouts declined to
try, she pointed out.
The &median Premiere of Out of Order opened at the Huron
Country Playhouse last week.

check, and Brendan Kraftcheck. IIj
