GRAND BEND - The new music
trend based on the Seattle grunge
scene is alive and well in Grand
Bend, and will be as long as the five
man band "Zen Arcade" is around to
perpetuate it.
Despite the fact that they only re-
cently acquired a new singer two
weeks ago, the two year old band is
made up of guitar and background
singer Dan Thiel, drummer De:ic4
McGee, rthymn guitarist Jason
Reid, singer Tim Peckham, and
bass guitarist Chris Cleave.
Inspired by other Seattle bands,
Zen Arcade plays a mix of cover
songs by Pearl Jam, Tragically Hip,
Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.
However, they do dabble in writing
their own lyrics, some of which are
based on their experiences with bor-
der guards, and interesting trips in
Cleave's van.
It is interesting to note that some
of the members arc self taught, like
Thiel who took voice lessons from
Bryan Volmer, the lead singer of the
Canadian rock group Helix, Thiel
learned to play his guitar through

World". Similarily, drummer De -
rick McGee is also self taught, and
Cleave often plays by ear.
Currently the band practices at
McGee's, who says, "my parents
find out the days we're practising,
then they usually leave. Or 1 guess
you could say they 'run to the
hills'." However all members say
their parents are very supportive of
the band.
Zen Arcade however, is only a
"summer thing," according to
Cleave, who is looking for employ-
ment as a correctional officer, as the
rest of the members are headed back
to school in tie fall. Thiel, who is
in his second year at Carleton Uni-
versity and played there with a band
called 'Stonewalled', says that next
year the band will try to resume as a
full time endeavor. "However,"
says Cleave, "we can't really plan
on making it a full time job. If it
happens, it happens."
With McGee acting as the bands
accountant, and Cleave the sound
technician, Zen Arcade can be seen
every Wednesday and Sunday at
Big Daddy's Shindig located on
main street in' Grand Bend. The
Zen Arcade members are not strang-
ers to performing as4they have also

senors of Exeter Villa.
Last Tuesday afternoon Geraldine Schenk, Harvey Smith and Doug
Lewis entertained.

served. Residents having July birthdays are Evelyn Heywood, Hazel Snell,
Mary Brown, Louisa Crecry, Reta Smith, Janet Metcalf, Hermon Foster,
Gertrude Scott, Mike Bourne, Irene Smith, Alma Lock and Jim McCarter.
The Dcnomme family had a blue Spruce tree planted at the Villa in liv-
ing memory of their loved one Bob. Shrubs were also planted by the Bow-
er family from England in living memory of their loved one Sani.
The Villa welcomes Elizabeth Schroeder back from hospital.
Florence MacLean is a patient in South Huron Hospital, and is also
wished a speedy recovery.
Emerson Wein from Crediton is being welcomed as a new resident at
the Villa.
With the wonderful weather residents have enjoyed being outside for
barbecues, lunches and walks or just relaxing in lawn chairs.
