Fire chief Jim Hoffman said that the truck failed to pass its last safety inspection, much in the same way that the Henson Department's tanker failed its last inspection. A lack of baffles in the tank to prevent splashing water from rolling the truck, and the need for structural improvements to the truck's frame were said to be needed to keep the truck on the road. Hoffman said he didn't want to make any comments further than that on the truck because it will be up to the fire department board, and the council's of Hay and Stephen Townships, to decide whether to go ahead with repairs, or replace the entire vehicle. Hay Township, at their July 5 meeting last Monday, approved a mo- tion to insist the truck be refurbished, including the baffles and chassis repairs due to financial constraints. The purchase of a new truck, said council, was out of the question. Last Tuesday evening, however, Stephen Township council agreed to seek two more quotations on the costs of repairing the tanker. A special fire board meeting is scheduled for this week, likely this evening, to discuss what options exist for the tanker truck - and wheth- er or not the repairs proposed will be adequate or worthwhile. Province issues plate stickers for Ontario firefighters TORONTO - The government is issuing special licence plate stick- ers for the personal vehicles of vol- unteer and full-time firefighters across the province, Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot announced Friday. "The special stickers allow the public and enforcement community to identify the personal vehicles of firefighters," said Pouliot. "We hope all motorists •will ensure they don't block or otherwise impede ac- cessibility to these vehicles, which May be needed to respond to an emergency at any time." The front plate stickers replace windshield stickers that have been used by some volunteer firefight- ers, especially in smaller communi- ties and rural areas. The amendment to the Highway Traffic Act to permit the special plate stickers is the result of recom- mendations from a committee that included representatives of the As- sociation of Fire Chiefs, enforce- ment agencies and the ministries of Transportation, Health and Solici- tor General and Correctional Ser- vices: Local fire chiefs will administer the sticker distribution. The sticker 'will be removed when a vehicle owner is no longer active as a fire- fighter.
