Police say vandals cut antenna wires and scanner wires at a residence on Thursday. Several thefts in the area are also under investigation. In- cluded is the theft of a barbecue propane tank from an Usbornd residence, a portable stereo tak- ' en from a vehicle in Hensel!, and the theft of the Ontario flag from the Usbome Township road works shed. Police have recovered a girls 21" bicycle at the Hensall Pub- lic School. Anyone missing such a bike is asked to call the OPP during business hours. Times -Advocate, July 14,1993 Page 21 United Way creates new pivsltlon CLINTON - A Goderich woman has been selected as the first execu- tive director of Huron United Way. Connie Argyle describes herself as a real "people person." • "I was surprised at the board's de- cision to select me," she says, as she lies no prior experience in this type of work. "But I think it was my ability to talk to anybody about anything at any time - I think they liked that," says Argyle. "You have to think on your feet in this job." The two-year-old Huron United Way is the newest one in Canada, says Bill 1 otnpson, chairman of the HUW board of directors. "We raise money from the Huron area for the Huron area," Argyle says. Last year's United Way campaign raised a total of $60,000, which was distributed among 18 agencies. That was up by about $25,000 from the previous year, says Thompson. "A large part of the funds are raised through payroll pledges," he says. However, the agency sets aside reserve funds at the beginning of each fiscal year, in case some of the funds promised through payroll pledges don't come through. Some- times that happens due to employee layoffs, resignations, retirings or for New dumping bylaw HENSALL - Council approved the dumping bylaw Monday night they have been working on for a number of months. The new bylaw was put into place in an attempt to lessen the burden of the Village landfill site. This means any item that can be recycled will be restricted from en- tering the site. Other materials that will not be accepted include: tires, car bodies, -111 chemicals, hazardous materials, I. dead animals and manure. The site attendant at the landfill has the discretion to rejet't items not seen as fit for Hensall's landfill. Council is still discussing tipping II fees and penalties for violating the bylaw. The new bylaw comes into effect II immediately. United Way funds do not support capital expenditures, such as the cost of a new building. The monies are intended to go towards opera- tions expenses. . Also, people whq donate have the option of designating where their money goes. Even if the specified agencies are not members of United Way, that's where the money goes, says Thompson. Argyle's position was created be- cause, although United Way is run mainly by volunteers, the local branch is growing, Thompson adds. "We needed somebody full-time to deal with the operations of the office," he says. He also predicts organizations like the Uniled Way will become more and more important down the line. "With more government cut- backs, there will be more need of community support for organiza- tions like these (the ones United Way represents)," he says. The next United Way campaign starts Sept. 15, 1993. - RICHARDT^ LOBB AUCTION CALENDAR CLINTON 482-7898 Sat., July 17 at 10:30 a.m. 2 trucks, 3 grain trailers, 4 trac- tors, grain buggy, grain dryer, new horse trailer, show har- ness, buggy, rubber tired show wagon, farm machinery, plus a 1991 Overum 8 furrow trail plow to be held for M.K.
